Bees stay hot by starting 2-0 at CCAC Tournament

The Bees carried their regular-season-ending hot streak into the postseason as St. Ambrose opened the CCAC Tournament with two wins.

A now 12-game winning streak leaves SAU and Saint Xavier as the only unbeatens in the double-elimination conference tournament that will continue Monday with the two teams squaring off at 10:30 a.m. in Elgin, Ill.

The Bees, who grabbed a share of second place after closing the regular season with 10 straight wins, got to this point with a 13-2 win over Robert Morris Friday and an 11-4 win over St. Francis Saturday.

Much like the team itself, Mike Miller stayed hot, picking up four hits in each game, but he had plenty of help.

In the seven-inning win over Robert Morris, Miller went 4-for-5. Kevin Zanger and David Gonzalez each had three hits, and Jake McCabe picked up two hits.

Nursing a 3-2 lead, St. Ambrose broke things open in the fifth as the first five Bees had hits in the inning. Zanger, Miller, Andrew Barreto and Gonzalez all singled before Matt Baldwin hit a run-scoring double to right. Tommy Goodale added an RBI groundout. Zanger's second hit of the inning brought in a pair before Miller capped the eight-run frame with an RBI double.

Zanger, Barreto, Gonzalez and McCabe each drove in two in the win.

Jake Sheley evened his record at 7-7 after allowing just one earned run while going the distance.

Miller and Goodale each homered and knocked in four runs in Saturday's 11-4 win over St. Francis. Miller's was a solo shot leading off the third that gave the Bees a 5-0 lead. It was part of a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Goodale launched a three-run blast as part of a five-run fifth inning that pushed the lead to 11-1.

Goodale started the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning. Drew Amador followed with a run-scoring ground out. Oli Herrera picked up an RBI double, one of his three hits on the day, and Zach Hart added an RBI triple in the frame to give the Bees a fast 4-0 lead.

Gonzalez and Baldwin joined Miller, Goodale and Herrera with multi-hit games.

The offensive explosion made a winner of McCabe, who surrendered nine hits and three runs over six innings in moving to 7-4 on the season. Cooper Sant Amour allowed one hit and one run over the final three innings.

SAU's run will continue into Tuesday win or lose. With a win over Saint Xavier Monday, the Bees will head to the championship round and play Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. A Monday loss will force the team into an elimination game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
