SAU gets to 8-5 in CCAC play by sweeping IU-South Bend

Tommy Goodale had five extra-base hits and the Bees received several strong pitching performances to move to 8-5 in the CCAC after sweeping a doubleheader from Indiana South Bend Wednesday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

Cooper Sant Amour got the save in both the 7-2 and 6-5 wins that moved St. Ambrose to 7-1 at home this season.

Goodale was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the opener. He doubled, tripled and homered. David Gonzalez and Kevin Zanger each collected two hits.

After the Bees took an early 1-0 lead on a IU South Bend throwing error, Gonzalez had an RBI triple to increase the lead to 2-0 in the first. Zanger had an RBI single in the second and Goodale blasted a solo shot to right in the third.

After the Titans scored twice in the top of the fourth to pull to within 4-2, the Bees put a three-spot up in the sixth. Matt Baldwin walked and scored on Goodale's triple in the right-center field gap. Pinch hitter Nick Foster then singled in Goodale before Zanger picked up his second RBI of the game with a double to right.

That was more than enough offense for Jake McCabe and Sant Amour. McCabe got the win after allowing five hits and two runs over five innings. Sant Amour, who entered with a 4-2 lead in the sixth, struck out five over his two scoreless innings of work.

Goodale stayed hot by doubling twice in four at bats, and Zach Hart and Mike Miller each had three hits to help the Bees rally in the second game for the sweep.

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, SAU trailed most of the way. Run-scoring singles from Greg Wymer in the first and Hart in the fourth, and a sacrifice fly from Wymer in the fifth had the Bees down 5-3. Zanger's squeeze bunt in the sixth trimmed the margin to 5-4. Then in the seventh, Miller led off with his second triple of the game and eventually scored on Baldwin's two-out hit to left to tie the score at 5-5.

St. Ambrose completed the comeback in the eighth. Hart reached on a two-out single, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball. Tanner Ennis hit a ground ball that got through the third baseman to score what proved to be the winning run.

The rally made a winner of Tyler Bromer, who worked 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Sant Amour got around a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth by starting a 1-6-3 double play to end the game with his fourth save of the year.

Wymer had two hits in the second game.

The Bees (12-21) will next head to Elgin, Ill., for a three-game set against Judson. The teams will play a nine-inning game Friday at 4 p.m. before playing a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
