SAU wins 3-2 to get split at Purdue Northwest

Nick Foster was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Mike Miller went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three pitchers limited Purdue Northwest to just two runs as the Bees defeated the Pride 3-2 in the second game of a CCAC doubleheader in Hammond, Ind., Tuesday afternoon. Purdue Northwest won the opener 3-0.

In his second start of the season, Cooper Sant Amour went seven innings, allowing seven hits and one run before giving way to Luke Bechina, who worked two-thirds of a scoreless inning. Tyler Bromer tossed the final 1.1 innings to get the save in Game 2.

Foster got the Bees off to a good start with a two-run single in the second to plate Miller with the game's first run.

Then in the sixth, SAU pushed the lead to 3-0. Miller got things started with a single to right before advancing to second on Matt Baldwin's sacrifice bunt. Oli Herrera followed with an infield single and pinch runner Taelor Lopez stole second to put runners on second and third. Foster drove in his second run of the game with a base hit to center and the final run came in on an error on Tommy Goodale's ground ball.

Although they ran into trouble late, the three Bee pitchers held on from there.

Purdue Northwest (12-11, 5-4 CCAC) scored once in the seventh inning before Sant Amour got a fly ball to escape a second-and-third, two-out situation. In the eighth, Bromer induced a ground ball to get out of a bases-loaded jam and found himself in more trouble an inning later. Trailing 3-1, the Pride put runners on second and third with no outs. The next hitter singled to bring in one run but Zach Hart, who contributed offensively with two hits, threw out the potential tying run at the plate. Bromer got a ground ball and the Bees turned two to earn the split.

Hart and Miller had SAU's only two hits in the opener. Jake Sheley took the loss.

St. Ambrose, now 9-19 overall and 5-3 in the CCAC, host Robert Morris Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park. The conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
