SAU defeats Saint Xavier 5-3 to take series finale

Nate Kurtz allowed just one hit over four innings of scoreless relief to close out SAU's 5-3 win over Saint Xavier Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park.

The victory salvaged the final game of the three-game weekend set as the Cougars swept a doubleheader Saturday in Chicago by scores of 5-1 and 9-8 (11 inn.).

Kurtz entered with two runners on and no outs in the sixth with the Bees nursing a 4-2 lead. He got out of the inning, allowing just one of the inherited runners to score, and dominated from there. The lone hit he surrendered came with one out in the seventh, and an out later, an error put two on but Kurtz induced a ground ball to escape the jam.

An error and a fielder's choice in the ninth gave Saint Xavier two more base runners with only one out, but Kurtz responded by recording his third strikeout before ending the game with a fly ball to center.

Trevor Hatcher picked up the win after allowing three hits and just one earned run over his five-plus innings of work.

Three of the Bees' five runs in the victory were unearned thanks to two Cougar errors. One of those errors led to two Bee runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first. An inning later, Zach Hart tripled and scored on Kevin Zanger's sacrifice bunt for a 3-1 lead. The teams traded runs in the fourth before Kurtz closed things out by earning his first save of the year.

Matt Baldwin finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

St. Ambrose had chances to win the second game of Sunday's doubleheader before falling in 11 innings.

SAU led 7-4 before giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Then in the 11th, David Gonzalez's two-out single scored pinch runner Zach Kaminski for a short-lived 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Cougars followed a one-out walk with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to plate two runs to steal the win.

The loss came after the Bees rallied from a 3-0 fourth-inning deficit.

Baldwin and Greg Wymer each had two hits and two RBIs. Zanger also had two hits and scored a pair of run. Gonzalez, Tanner Ennis, Oli Herrera and Drew Amador also had RBIs.

Cooper Sant Amour took the loss. Jake McCabe earned a no-decision after allowing just three earned runs over his nine innings of work. Four SAU errors led to four unearned runs.

The Bees managed just two hits in the series opener, singles off the bats of Zanger and Josh Hlubek. The SAU run came in the fourth. Zanger singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on Gonzalez's ground out and came around to score of a sacrifice fly from Wymer. That cut the deficit to 2-1 before SXU broke things open with a three-run sixth inning. Jake Sheley took the loss.

SAU will now visit Purdue Northwest Tuesday. The conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
