SAU Baseball on Spring Break trip

The St. Ambrose baseball team traveled through Tennessee and Georgia during its Spring Break trip.

Monday, Mar. 13
Cumberland 14, St. Ambrose 0 - Box score
The Bees were completely shut down in their opener, getting just two hits - singles from Zach Hart and David Gonzalez - in the 14-0 loss. Jake Sheley kept St. Ambrose in the game early, allowing just one run over the first three innings, before running into trouble in the fourth. Cumberland exploded for seven runs in the fourth and backed that up with three in both the fifth and sixth innings to win going away. Sheley took the loss.

St. Ambrose 10, Cumberland 6 - Box score
The SAU offense came alive in the second game, scoring at least one run in five innings in a 10-6 win at Cumberland. The Bees got going right away as Zach Hart led off with a single and scored on Tanner Ennis's double to right. David Gonzalez later drove in two with a hit to cap a three-run first inning. Andrew Barreto had a two-run single in the third and Matt Baldwin and Greg Wymer had RBI doubles in the fourth to give St. Ambrose a 7-3 lead. Wymer added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the Bees scored twice in the seventh thanks to a Cumberland error. Baldwin finished 3-for-4 at the plate while Ennis, Barreto and Oli Herrera each collected two hits. Taelor Lopez scored three runs. Jake McCabe earned the win after striking out six over six innings. Luke Bechina allowed one run in his one inning of relief.

Tuesday, Mar. 14
Campbellsville 1, St. Ambrose 0 (10 inn.) - Box score
The Bees dropped a pitchers' duel 1-0 in 10 innings to Campbellsville. The two teams combined for 13 hits with the Bees collecting six. Kane Klais allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings. St. Ambrose had its chances, leaving runners at second and third in both the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, Zach Hart and Greg Wymer drew walks before moving up on Tommy Goodale's one-out ground out. But David Gonzalez flied out to right to end the threat. Then in the ninth, Goodale ripped a one-out double to right and Gonzalez was intentionally walked. Andrew Barreto's ground ball advanced the runners but Matt Baldwin's line drive was caught by the left fielder. SAU escaped a jam in the ninth as the Tigers loaded the bases with one out but a double-play ball erased the threat. But Campbellsville got the win an inning later. Two walks were followed by a two-out hit up the middle to score the winning run. Jordan Chapel was tagged with the loss after throwing 3.2 innings in relief. Wymer had two of SAU's six hits.

Indiana Tech 3, St. Ambrose 1 - Box score
Two errors leading to two unearned runs in the first inning were too much to overcome as St. Ambrose fell to Indiana Tech 3-1. Cooper Sant Amour was the hard-luck loser after allowing just three hits over six innings. He allowed another unearned run in the sixth on the Bees' third error of the game. SAU got one run back in the seventh when Zach Hart led off with a double and scored on Tanner Ennis's single. Hart went 2-for-3 with Ennis and Tommy Goodale picking up the other two Bee hits.

Following a leadoff triple from Hart, SAU received an RBI double from Mike Miller, an RBI groundout from Tommy Goodale and a run-scoring triple from Gonzalez. SAU hitters struck out 11 times. Jake Sheley kept the Bees even through four innings before allowing three runs in the fifth and getting charged with two more in the sixth as Georgia Gwinnett built a 6-1 lead.

Saturday, Mar. 18
No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett 10, St. Ambrose 4 (Game 1) - Box score
Zach Hart and Mike Miller combined for four of the Bees' seven hits in a 10-4 loss to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. Andrew Barreto had an RBI single and Miller scored on a balk to give St. Ambrose a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. But the Grizzlies came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. Down 9-2, SAU got two runs back in the eighth on Greg Wymer's two-run double. Kane Klais was charged with the loss.

No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett 14, St. Ambrose 1 (Game 2) - Box score
A seven-run second inning propelled No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett to a 14-1 win over St. Ambrose as the Grizzlies completed a sweep of the teams' three-game weekend series. David Gonzalez led off the second with a double, moved to third on a Tanner Ennis groundout before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. But Georgia Gwinnett put together seven hits and took advantage of two SAU errors to plate seven runs to take control. Greg Wymer collected two of the Bees' eight hits. Jake McCabe took the loss.

The Bees will play their home opener Tuesday, Mar. 21, against Mount Mercy. The first pitch of the doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park will be at 1 p.m.
