Home runs hurt SAU in four-game set at Benedictine

The Bees were undone by the long ball this weekend.

Benedictine clubbed a total of nine home runs, including a walk-off three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning in the series finale, to sweep a four-game set from St. Ambrose.

They more than offset a pair of grand slams from the Bees, coming off the bats of Greg Wymer and Tommy Goodale.

Despite the two grand slams, SAU dropped Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 19-7 and 8-5.

The Ravens scored at least two runs in every inning behind four home runs. Wymer's slam, as part of a 3-for-4 day, came in the fifth to get the Bees to within 11-5, but Benedictine responded with four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to break things open.

Jake McCabe and Kevin Zanger each had two hits in the opener. Andrew Barreto and Tanner Ennis each drove in one. Kane Klais took the loss.

Goodale's grand slam came in the seventh inning of Saturday's second game but was too little too late. Zanger's two-out double scored pinch runner Zach Hart as St. Ambrose trailed just 2-1 after two. The deficit was 4-1 when the Ravens scored four times in the fifth. Goodale's homer came with one out in the seventh and Matt Baldwin followed with a base hit, but the rally ended there.

Zanger collected two of SAU's six hits. Jordan Chapel threw 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Jake Sheley, who took the loss.

All three Benedictine home runs on Sunday were three-run shots, putting the Bees in early holes in the eventual 7-4 and 10-8 losses.

McCabe and David Gonzalez each had two hits in Sunday's opener. And Gonzalez drove in two. Zanger scored on a wild pitch to pull the Bees to within 4-3 in the fourth but a three-run blast in the bottom of the frame gave the Ravens some breathing room.

Trevor Hatcher took the loss. Luke Bechina allowed just two hits over 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

In the finale, Benedictine led 7-2 after three. But SAU battled back to tie the game in the fourth. Wymer had a two-run double. Oli Herrera and Baldwin each knocked in one and Taelor Lopez scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 7-7.

SAU went ahead in the seven. Nick Foster had a one out single to right center and pinch runner Lopez moved to second on a Baldwin groundout. Hart came through with a two-out double to left center to plate the go-ahead run. It was one of three hits in the game for Hart. But in the bottom of the seventh, a hit batsman and a walk were followed by a one-out three-run walk-off homer.

Wymer, Goodale and Baldwin had multi-hit games. Cooper Sant Amour took the loss. McCabe started and allowed seven runs, just three earned over the first six innings.

St. Ambrose, now 3-9 overall, will begin its Spring Break trip with a four-game series at No. 6 Lindsey Wilson Saturday and Sunday.
