St. Ambrose splits four-game set at Baker

St. Ambrose split a weekend four-game series at Baker (Kan.). The teams exchanged doubleheader sweeps with the Bees starting with wins of 2-1 and 5-3 Saturday. The Wildcats returned the favor Sunday by taking the doubleheader by scores of 5-4 in nine innings and 5-2.

SAU is now 3-5 on the season.

Kane Klais got the win in the opener after allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings. He struck out two in the 2-1 win.

St. Ambrose, which managed just four hits, finally got on the board in the fifth. Tommy Goodale started the inning with a double to right and Matt Baldwin followed with an RBI single to left. An inning later, Zach Hart was hit by a pitch and Jake McCabe singled to left. A Greg Wymer fly ball moved both runners up and Andrew Barreto gave SAU a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right.

Cooper Sant Amour entered in relief and gave up a single run in the sixth before pitching a perfect seventh for the save.

A three-run seventh inning completed Saturday's sweep in the 5-3 win. With the Bees trailing 3-2, Barreto and Goodale reached on an infield single and a walk to start the seventh. Baldwin's infield hit was throws away by the third baseman allowing both runners to score. Kevin Zanger brought in an insurance run with a base hit.

St. Ambrose had led 2-0 in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Baldwin and a run-scoring single from David Gonzalez. Baker scored a single run in the first and added two in the third to take the lead before the seventh-inning rally.

Jake Sheley struck out six and allowed just one earned run over six innings to earn the win. Tyler Bromer worked through some trouble in the seventh to get the save.

SAU got off to a great start Sunday, scoring twice on RBI hits from Wymer and Barreto in the top of the first. But the Wildcats came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on another run in the second.

The Bees drew even in the sixth. Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Josh Hlubek followed with a run-scoring single to tie the game.

In extra innings, Hart's two-out double in the top of the ninth was wasted and Baker capitalized scoring in the bottom of the inning on a walk-off single to left.

Hart, Wymer and Barreto each had two hits. Jordan Chapel took the loss. Luke Bechina threw three scoreless innings in relief in the 5-4 loss.

Baker got the series split with a 5-2 win in the finale. SAU trailed 5-0 before loading the bases with no outs in the sixth. Hart was able to score on a double-play ball and Goodale drove in Wymer with a two-out hit, but the rally ended there.

McCabe was charged with the loss.

SAU will return to Kansas for a four-game series at Benedictine next Saturday and Sunday.
