Softball honored as Team of the Month; Zang and Minard named February Athletes of the Month
Pedro Zang (men's volleyball) and Lexi Minard (women's track and field) were selected in February by the St. Ambrose Sports Information staff as the February Fighting Bees Athletes of the Month.
The Fighting Bees softball team was named February's Team of the Month after a stellar February record of 8-2.
Zang is a standout newcomer on the Fighting Bees men's volleyball team which earned him Athlete of the Month honors in February. The freshman of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil had a breakout match of 20 kills when the Bees hosted Viterbo on Feb. 24. The 6-4 attacker also posted a 15 kill game only a match later when St. Ambrose hosted Trinity Christian. In the month of February, Zang put down a team-high 107 total kills to average 3.34 kills per set. With these performances, Zang helped the Bees win six matches throughout the course of February.
Minard, a national qualifier, was named February's Athlete of the Month. The freshman distance runner ran the 3000m run at the Indoor Track and Field National Championships for the Bees where she crossed the finish line in the 17th spot with a time of 10:33:33. Minard was the only female of the St. Ambrose track and field team to qualify for the NAIA Championships. The local runner (Bettendorf, Iowa) impressed at the CCAC Indoor Championships as well. Minard earned fourth place in the 3000m run and eight place in the 1000m run at the hosted conference meet.
The dominant Fighting Bees softball team was named Team of the Month after they posted an 8-2 record. The Bees recorded major wins over College of Saint Mary (9-3), Cleary (9-2), and Monmouth (10-2) in their hosted St. Ambrose Dome tournaments. SAU has a batting average of .329 as a team and registered 49 total runs, 44 of which were RBIs. St. Ambrose looks to get outdoors as they will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to play Grand View this weekend.
Each month, the St. Ambrose Sports Information Department will select a Male and Female Athlete of the Month based on their exceptional accomplishments. A Team of the Month will be chosen as well by the Sports Information staff.
