
Benes, Wendt selected as August Athlete's of the Month; Football selected as Team of the Month
Luke Benes and Kendall Wendt were tabbed as the August Fighting Bee Athletes of the Month, selected by the Sports Information Department. Both athletes were selected based on their outstanding performances in their respected organizations.
Your Fighting Bee Football team was selected as the Team of the Month after their 28-21 opening season overtime win vs. Briar Cliff.
After a stellar performance at the opening Twilight Invitational, Luke Benes, was selected as the Fighting Bee Men's Athlete of the Month. Benes was the top finishing Bee for St. Ambrose, coming in third in the men's 5k with a time of 15:35.2. The senior was only a second behind the runner-up and a mere six seconds behind the first-place winner with a time of 15:29. With Benes time of 15:35.2, the Chicago native's time was good for a personal record. Overall, the men's cross country team ran 2:56 faster than the first 5k meet last season.
Kendall Wendt of the women's soccer program tabbed the Fighting Bee Women's Athlete of the Month honors for her fast start to the season with three goals. Those goals coming against top-25 opponents to keep her team considered for the national poll rankings. The senior forward scored twice on three attempts in the Bees first match at #19 Marian University. Then, to turn around and score in the home opener vs. #24 Missouri Valley to give the Bees their first win of the year.
Your Fighting Bees started the season 1-0 after an exciting win in overtime fashion to earn honors as the Team of the Month for August. The Bees pumped out a total of 477 yards of offense in their home opener in front of a big crowd in the team's first night game at Jack & Pat Bush Stadium. Once the third quarter hit, the Bees heated up to score two touchdowns back-to-back to take the lead. Briar Cliff scored a late touchdown and St. Ambrose knocked a field goal wide to send the game to overtime. In crunch time, the Bees were able to score the lone touchdown to win 28-21. As the Bees transition to the Heart of America Athletic Conference, they look forward to imprinting themselves as a top competitor.
Each month, the St. Ambrose Sports Information Department will select a Male and Female Athlete of the Month based on their exceptional accomplishments. A Team of the Month will be chosen as well by the Sports Information staff.
