Fall season ends with victories over Grand View
The St. Ambrose men's and women's tennis teams concluded the fall portion of their schedules by extending winning streaks.
The Bee men defeated Grand View 5-2 for their sixth straight win and the women took down the Vikings 7-0 for their fifth consecutive victory.
Four of the six singles matches on the men's side went to third-set super-tiebreakers.
Sebastian Arevalo at No. 1 and Shingai Manyonga at No. 4 each won in the super breaker. Arevalo posted a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 victory while Manyonga claimed a 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 win. Gabriel Guimaray fell 10-6 in the third at No. 2 singles and Emilio Palencia lost 11-9 in the third in his match at No. 5.
Miguel Sampaio and Austin Hutton cruised to straight-set singles wins. Sampaio dropped a single game in his 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3. And at No. 6, Hutton won 6-1, 6-2.
St. Ambrose won all three doubles matches. Sampaio and Manyonga were pushed to the limit in their 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 team of Arevalo and Guimaray and the No. 3 team of Palencia and Hutton won by matching 6-2 scores.
The women only played three matches, picking up forfeits in the other six.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Jenna Smithmeyer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Hayden Evans won at No. 2 singles as her opponent was forced to retire before play started. Catherine Meystrik, Yeva Shershan and Riley Heiar all won by forfeit.
In the only doubles action, Smithmeyer and Meystrik held on for a 6-4 victory. The team of Aguirre Cortez and Evans and the team of Shershan and Heiar both won by forfeit.
The Bees will return to action in the spring.
