Horst golden goal sends the Bees to the CCAC Championship
St. Ambrose women's soccer punched its ticket to the CCAC Championship with a thrilling 2–1 double-overtime victory over the Cougars Friday evening in Chicago, Ill.
After falling behind early, the Bees showed resilience. Saint Xavier took a 1–0 lead in the 19th minute of the match. Despite several chances before halftime, St. Ambrose couldn't find the equalizer and entered the break trailing by one.
The Bees responded in the second half when Jenna Horst dribbled around the goalie to bury a shot off a pass from Mia Hefner in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 1–1. Both teams continued to trade opportunities through regulation and the first overtime, with goalkeeper Ella Oscarsson making several key saves to keep St. Ambrose in the match.
Then, with just under seven minutes remaining in the second overtime, Horst delivered again — netting the golden goal in the 103rd minute to lift the Bees to a dramatic 2–1 victory.
The Bees outshot the Cougars 15–14 and held a slight 5–4 edge in corner kicks. Horst finished with both goals for the Bees and led in shots with four. Hefner trailed with three shots while Lauren Bendall and Olivia Infante added two. Chloe Travis, Addie Kerkhoff, McKenna Shilevinatz, and Isabella Crawford were able to get one shot off.
Oscarsson recorded seven saves in a standout performance between the posts.
With the win, St. Ambrose advances to the CCAC Tournament Championship, where they will look to claim the tournament conference title and an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. No. 3 St. Ambrose will host No. 5 St. Francis on Tuesday, November 11th, at 6:00 p.m.
