Bees get sweep of Monmouth
The SAU men's tennis team had little trouble handling Monmouth Wednesday afternoon in Monmouth, Ill., and the Bee women were only pushed slightly in their dual win.
The St. Ambrose men dropped only six combined games in the six singles matches. Gabriel Guimaray, Miguel Sampaio and Esteban Rocha each earned 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Shingai Manyonga lost just a single game in his 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3. Playing at No. 1 singles, Sebastian Arevalo won 6-1, 6-2 and Emilio Palencia was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 5.
Doubles play was just as dominant.
All three SAU teams - Arevalo-Guimaray, Manyonga-Sampaio and Palencia-Austin Hutton - won by 6-0 scores to help the team improve to 2-1 on the season.
The women won for the first time this season with their 5-2 decision.
Hayden Evans (No. 3 singles) and Catherine Meystrik (No. 5) won by identical 6-1, 6-0 margins. Jenna Smithmeyer prevailed 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4 while Yeva Shershan was pushed in the opening set of her 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 6.
The Bees dropped the top two singles matches with Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek each falling in straight sets.
Despite losing the No. 1 doubles match, SAU earned the doubles point with wins in the other two matchups. Meystrik and Smithmeyer won 6-0 at No. 2 and the No. 3 team of Turek and Shershan won 6-2.
The teams return to action Tuesday with duals at Dubuque.
