SAU rallies from 17 down to defeat Missouri Baptist
Guillermo Narbona scored inside in the final minute to give St. Ambrose the lead for good in a 69-67 win at Missouri Baptist Wednesday afternoon.
Narbona's basket gave the Bees a 65-64 lead after the team had trailed by as many as 17 points. SAU then got back-to-back defensive stops leading to four Will Spriggs free throws and a 69-64 lead with nine seconds remaining. Missouri Baptist (4-8) hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds before SAU was able to run out the clock.
St. Ambrose (8-2) scored just 13 points over the first 14-plus minutes of the game. Thanks to an early 16-0 Spartans run, the Bees faced a 30-13 deficit at that point and trailed 36-22 at the half.
But after shooting just over 28 percent in the opening half, the Bees shot nearly 49 percent in the second. Like he did last time out, Spriggs led the second-half charge.
The senior guard scored 19 second-half points to help SAU secure a win over Calumet Monday, and on Wednesday, following a scoreless first half, it was his 17 points after halftime that led the rally.
It was a Spriggs three-point play that drew the teams even at 59-59 with 5:38 to play. He then tracked down a defensive rebound and went the distance for a layup and a 61-59 lead. It was the team's first lead since scoring the first four points of the contest. Atem Agot followed with a layup to push the lead to 63-59 with just over four minutes left.
Missouri Baptist followed with five straight points to regain a 64-63 lead before Narbona scored at the rim and Spriggs added the late free throws.
Spriggs led three Bees in double figures with his 17 points. Kieran Farrell scored 11 with all of his points also coming in the second half. Ignacio Dacunda came off the bench to post a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Narbona tallied nine points and nine rebounds while Agot finished with eight points. Grant Mason scored six, Solomon Garrison had five and Collin Wainscott netted three in the win.
St. Ambrose will return to conference play Saturday with a game at Judson.
