Smith, Benes lead SAU at CCAC Championships

Battling the cold and wind, the St. Ambrose men and women each finished sixth at the CCAC Cross Country Championships Saturday at Channahon State Park in Channahon, Ill.

Adeline Smith was the top Bee finisher, placing 24th in the women's 5K race. She finished in a time of 20:56.

Megan Jansett and Allison Hein were second and third on the team. The two came in within six seconds of each other. Jansett was 39th overall in 22:17 and Hein was 40th in 22:23.

Jayne Eilderts added a top-50 finish. Her time of 23:26 was good for 50th. Rylee McCrery, who finished in 25:09, was the fifth Bee finisher. In her first event of the year, Anna Pierce also competed for St. Ambrose, crossing the line in 25:58.

St. Francis, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, won its eighth straight women's conference championship.

In the men's 8K, Luke Benes was the top SAU runner. His time of 27:25 placed him 28th in the field.

Benes led a pack of Bees across the finish line, with the top five runners all finishing within 34 seconds of each other. Dayton Hauger was 30th in 27:41 and Chris Miserendino was 31st in 27:43. Rounding out the top five were George Barton (27:48) and Ian Eller (27:59).

Nathan Boleyn and Kale Cartee were just outside the top five. Boleyn finished in 28:06 and Cartee was just a second behind. Noah Maske (28:55), Brennon Munch (29:10), Bryan Flentge (29:36), Tommy Ashby (29:39), Jon Kaleka (29:47), Ross Willerth (29:58), Kevin Chaney (30:52) and Donnie Ingram (30:57) also competed for St. Ambrose.

The No. 8-ranked St. Francis men's team claimed its third straight CCAC crown.
