Bees take on top competition at NAIA Great Lakes Challenge

The St. Ambrose cross country teams traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. take part in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge, a meet packed with top competition from across the country.

Emma Duncan led the charge with a 32nd-place finish for St. Ambrose in the women's 5k White race. Duncan crossed the finish line at 19:58 to record her third sub-20 5k time of the year.

Jess Mendenhall ran her fastest time of the year to place 47th overall, finishing with a time of 20:17. Kylie Mercier crossed the finish line next with a time of 21:37. Morgan Miller and Rileigh Fortune rounded out the scoring for the Fighting Bees, finishing at 22:59 and 24:13, respectively.

Crossing the finish line together were Becca Neaterour and Jayne Eilderts. Neaterour finished with a time of 25:25, with Eilderts one second behind at 25:26.

The St. Ambrose women's team finished with 498 points to place 20th in the 27-team event. Point Park tallied 147 points to win the women's White race.

On the men's side, Nolan Rudd continued to impress for the Fighting Bees. Rudd cruised to a personal best time of 25:10 to finish 29th in the men's 8k Maroon race, an event stacked with top-25 ranked NAIA programs. Rudd's new personal best has again reset the second-fastest time in St. Ambrose school history, which he had set two weeks prior at the Seminole Valley Stampede (25:15).

George Barton set his own personal best in the Maroon race, finishing with a time of 26:11 to finish in 90th-place overall. Not far behind was Matt Jung who finished with a time of 26:25 to place 110th.

Luke Benes and Lucas Creek rounded out the scorers for the Fighting Bees. Benes finished with a 27:14 to finish in 166th, while Creek crossed the line at 27:34 to finish in 183rd.

Also running in the Maroon race for the Fighting Bees were Dayton Hauger (28:08), Chris Borschnack (28:10), Kale Cartee (28:42) and Tommy Ashby (29:49).

The St. Ambrose men's team tallied 525 points to place 21st in the 27-team event. St. Francis (Ill.) finished with 92 points to leave as meet champions.

The NAIA Great Lakes Challenge was the final regular season meet for St. Ambrose. The Fighting Bees will now be gearing up for the CCAC Championships on Nov. 6, hosted by Olivet Nazarene in Bourbonnais, Ill.
