Bees cruise through quarterfinal win over Lakers

St. Ambrose wasted little time in getting through its CCAC Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday night. The Bees took down Roosevelt 25-18, 25-13, 25-23 in Lee Lohman Arena and will now host Trinity Christian in a semifinal Thursday night.

Along with advancing in the postseason, SAU exacted a little revenge against a Roosevelt team that defeated them in five sets during the regular season back on Oct. 3.

This time, the Bees were in complete control throughout the first two sets. St. Ambrose totaled 27 kills against just 12 hitting errors over the first two sets, while the Lakers posted 15 kills and 11 errors.

In the opening set, SAU used a pair of five-point runs to surge ahead early 13-5 and coasted from there. In the second, it was an 11-0 run, behind the serving of Hannah Sondag, that turned a 5-4 deficit into a 15-5 advantage.

But things got tighter in the third.

Roosevelt (11-14) won the first four points of the game and led by as many as four as late as 23-19. But the Lakers would not score again.

After an RU hitting error, a kill from Alex Horne cut the margin to 23-21 and forced a Laker timeout. Mackenzie Grafton put down a kill to trim the deficit to a single point. Back-to-back Roosevelt hitting errors put St. Ambrose in front, and Meredith Siebers closed out the win with her 15th kill of the match.

It capped a big night for Siebers. She had just one hitting error in 26 chances to finish with a .538 attacking percentage.

Grafton also finished with 15 kills. Meredith Umland registered eight while also committing just a single error. Horne and Devyn Church each collected three kills.

Sondag led all players with 33 assists and four aces. Lexi Huntley led the way with eight digs. Adriana Diaz had seven and Grafton and Siebers each picked up six.

Horne was also credited with four total blocks. Diaz and Kaleigh Bergschneider each had an ace.

Now riding a five-match winning streak, St. Ambrose (17-14) will host Trinity Christian Thursday at 7 p.m. The Bees swept the Trolls 3-0 at home back on Sept. 30. Top-seeded Judson will host Olivet Nazarene in the other semifinal Thursday. The championship match will be played Saturday.
