SAU takes down IU Northwest in three sets

St. Ambrose climbed into a tie for second place in the CCAC following a 25-23, 25-19, 25-14 win at Indiana Northwest Tuesday night. The Bees, now 13-14 overall, are tied with St. Francis with identical 7-4 league marks.

SAU got better each set in pulling away from IU Northwest (8-20, 5-7 CCAC). The Bees hit at a .220 clip in the opening set, upped that mark to .237 in the second, and finished with a .360 attack percentage in the third.

The first set was tied as late as 22-22 before kills from Mackenzie Grafton and Adriana Diaz put St. Ambrose in front 24-22. Following a RedHawk point, Meredith Siebers closed out the set with a kill.

Big runs in the middle of the second and third sets propelled SAU to the sweep. Tied at 11-11 in the second, the Bees received four straight kills from Grafton to open up some breathing room. Following an IU Northwest error, Grafton had another kill for a 17-11 lead. The margin was just 11-9 in the third before a kill from Hannah Sondag sparked a 6-1 run. Grafton had two kills and Alex Horne another during the spurt that pushed the advantage to 17-10.

Grafton finished with a match-high 15 kills. Siebers totaled nine while Meredith Umland and Devyn Church each put down seven. Horne added three kills.

Sondag was credited with 34 assists and picked up seven digs. Haley Doucet handed out four assists. Diaz led all players with 18 digs. Siebers had 10 and Lexi Huntley matched Sondag with seven. Diaz (three) and Skyler Kuntzman (two) combined for five of the team's six aces in the win.

The Bees return home to host CCAC-leading Judson (19-2, 11-0 CCAC) Thursday at 7 p.m.
