Bees drop three at Missouri Baptist Classic

Wrapping up a stretch of five matches in five days, and playing a pair of top-10 opponents, was too tough for St. Ambrose to overcome as the Bees dropped three matches at the Missouri Baptist Classic Friday and Saturday.

Friday, the Bees faced the two nationally-ranked foes. SAU fell to No. 7 Missouri Baptist 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 and to No. 8 Park 25-11, 25-18, 25-19.

Against the host Spartans, the Bees were led by Meredith Siebers and Mackenzie Grafton. Both reached double figures in kills as Siebers had 11 and Grafton finished with 10. Meredith Umland was next on the team with a pair.

Hannah Sondag was credited with 23 assists. Grafton (eight), Adriana Diaz (seven) and Audrey Witte (five) led the team in digs.

In the Park loss, Grafton led the way with nine kills and six digs. Umland added eight and Siebers had five. Sondag recorded 21 assists.

The two-day event ended with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-23 setback to Lindsey Wilson.

After splitting the first two sets with the Blue Raiders, the Bees held leads of 19-17 in the third and 23-19 in the fourth. But SAU couldn't close out either set, and Lindsey Wilson closed out the match with the final six points.

Grafton (16) and Siebers (14) reached double-digit kills. Witte put down nine, Umland had seven and Ella Gatz registered three.

Sondag had 43 assists. Diaz picked up 22 digs. Witte had 14, Grafton 11 and Siebers 10. Umland was credited with six total blocks. Diaz and Skyler Kuntzman each had two of the team's eight aces.

After a break, St. Ambrose (12-14) will return to conference action at Indiana Northwest on Oct. 24.
