Sondag collects 2000th career assist in win over RedHawks

Hannah Sondag recorded her 2000th career assist in helping St. Ambrose defeat Indiana Northwest 25-19, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18 at Lee Lohman Arena Thursday night. She is just the fifth Bee to reach the milestone since 2000.

Play was halted early in the fourth set after Sondag's pass leading to a Meredith Siebers kill gave her 2000 in her SAU career.

More importantly, the mark came in a victory.

After winning the first two sets, St. Ambrose came out a bit flat in the third, allowing Indiana Northwest (6-18, 4-5 CCAC) to climb back into the match. But thanks to Sondag's milestone moment, the Bees came out rejuvenated in the fourth.

Mackenzie Grafton had three kills and Siebers one as part of a 6-1 run to open the set. After the RedHawks got to within 13-12, Sondag, Grafton and Ella Gatz had consecutive kills to open a 16-12 cushion. Up 20-17, SAU put things away with a four-point run before Meredith Umland's kill two points later closed out the win.

Sondag finished with 44 assists to go along with 13 digs and three kills. She is the second Bee to reach a major milestone this season. Siebers recorded her 1000th kill in a match at Roosevelt on Oct. 3. Sondag has already surpassed her single-season high with 840 assists this season. The graduate student from Webster Groves, Mo., has 2017 in her career.

Grafton put down 22 kills, Siebers finished with 17, Umland had eight and Audrey Witte added five. Siebers and Adriana Diaz matched Sondag with 13 digs apiece. Diaz also had eight assists. Grafton and Witte picked up 11 digs each. Skyler Kuntzman had four. Sondag, Witte and Devyn Church each had a service ace in the victory.

St. Ambrose (12-11, 6-4 CCAC) will play three matches at the Missouri Baptist Classic beginning Friday morning.
