SAU overcomes slow start to sweep CCSJ

Trailing by as many as four points early, and behind by three as late as 19-16 in the opening set, St. Ambrose rallied for a 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 home win over Calumet St. Joseph Tuesday night.

A kill from Mackenzie Grafton helped get things turned around. That was followed by a Calumet error before Meredith Siebers and Ella Gatz combined on a block to knot the score at 19-19. The teams traded points before a Siebers kill gave the Bees the lead for good. A Crimson Wave hitting error and a kill from Audrey Witte pushed the lead to 23-20, and a few points later, Meredith Umland put down a kill to close out the first set.

From there it was all SAU. After facing that 19-16 deficit, the Bees outscored the Wave 59-39 the rest of the way.

St. Ambrose raced out to a 9-3 lead in the second set behind four kills from Grafton. The third set saw the Bees win six of the first seven points thanks to two quick kills from Siebers. Calumet (5-11, 4-7 CCAC) never truly threatened in either set from there.

Grafton (13), Siebers (11) and Umland (10) all reached double-digit kills while combining for just five hitting errors. As a team, SAU collected 41 kills against nine errors for a .314 hitting percentage.

Witte registered four kills and Hannah Sondag added three with a match-high 32 assists. Adriana Diaz, Haley Doucet, Skyler Kuntzman, Siebers and Witte also had assists.

Diaz led the team with 13 digs. Siebers had 10, Sondag seven, Witte six and Grafton five. Gatz was credited with a match-best five blocks.

The Bees, now 11-11 overall and 5-4 in CCAC play, will host conference foe Indiana Northwest Thursday at 6 p.m.
