Siebers reaches 1000-kill milestone at Roosevelt

Meredith Siebers became just the 12th player since 2002 to reach 1000 career kills when she hit the milestone at Roosevelt Tuesday night.

Needing just four kills entering the match, Siebers took care of things early in the second set. The 5-10 senior outside hitter collected kills on two of the Bees' first three points of the set to reach the mark. Head coach Dawn Steinhauser immediately called timeout to celebrate the occasion.

Unfortunately for Siebers and the Bees, the milestone came in a loss as SAU's rally came up short in a 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 22-25, 15-11 setback to the Lakers.

After dropping the first two sets, St. Ambrose fought back in the third. Leading 19-17 late, a kill from Meredith Umland and an ace from Kelsey Koberg came part of a three-point run to open up some distance between the teams. After a Roosevelt point, Siebers had a kill to help the Bees close out the set.

Three kills from Mackenzie Grafton sparked a 5-0 run that helped SAU open a 13-8 lead in the fourth. Kylie Brosius had a kill to help up the lead to 16-10. Roosevelt (6-10, 2-5 CCAC) was able to get within two points at 19-17 before Siebers and Grafton each put down a pair of kills to extend the match to a fifth set.

The Bees fought out of an early 6-2 hole in the fifth. A Laker service error, a Koberg ace and a block from Umland and Devyn Church cut the deficit to 6-5. SAU trailed by a single point at 8-7 following an Umland kill. But that was followed by a back-breaking four-point Roosevelt run that opened up a 12-7 lead. St. Ambrose could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Grafton led the team with 18 kills and 10 digs. She had just three hitting errors to hit .429 for the match. Siebers totaled 17 kills, giving her 1013 in her career to place her 10th on the school's caeer list since 2002. She had just two hitting errors for a .441 attack percentage. Umland put down 10 kills, while Church, Brosius, Hannah Sondag, Adriana Diaz and Audrey Witte each had two.

Sondag led all players with 46 assists. Diaz picked up seven digs while Siebers was credited with six. Koberg (four), Skyler Kuntzman (three) and Grafton (two) had multiple aces while Umland was in on four total blocks in the loss.

St. Ambrose (10-11, 4-3 CCAC) will host Calumet St. Joseph next Tuesday.
