St. Ambrose gets by Governors State in five

After winning the first two sets, St. Ambrose women's volleyball dropped the next two but came back to win the fifth to defeat Governors State 25-16, 25-16, 19-25, 22-25, 15-9 Wednesday night in University Park, Ill.

The Bees jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the decisive fifth set on an assisted block by Kylie Brosius and Meredith Siebers. The Jaguars stayed within four at 13-9, but a kill from Mackenzie Grafton and another assisted block from Brosius and Siebers won the match for SAU.

Leading 8-6 in the first set, St. Ambrose upped their lead with a kill from Hannah Sondag, an ace from Sondag, and a kill from Grafton to force a Governors State timeout at 11-6. After a Bee service error to make the score 20-14, SAU went on a 4-0 run to get to set point. The Jaguars rallied two points, but one of Grafton's 22 kills on the night finished off the set.

Grafton started the second set with three straight points (two kills and an ace) to give St. Ambrose an early 3-0 lead. SAU would continue to build the lead with an Audrey Witte service ace making it a 10-4 advantage. The Bees had a .407 hitting percentage in the set. After a kill from Siebers, and an assisted block from Sondag and Devyn Church, the Bees went up 18-11 and closed out from there with kills by Grafton and Siebers.

The Bees stumbled in the next two sets and had a -.061 hitting percentage in the fourth set to lead to the deciding set. St. Ambrose put down eight kills and had zero errors for a .500 percentage in the fifth to claim the match.

Grafton led the way with a game-high 22 kills, and Siebers had 10. Umland recorded seven followed by Church with six. Grafton collected a game-high 11 digs, Siebers had eights, and Lexi Huntley picked up six. Sondag finished with 31 assists.

SAU will be back at home next week when they face Saint Xavier on September 26 at 7 p.m. in Lee Lohman Arena.
