SAU downs Saints in straight sets
Playing for the first time at home this season. St. Ambrose women's volleyball defeated St. Francis (Ill.) 25-19, 25-23, 25-14 to pick up their second CCAC victory.
The first set was back and forth until a kill by Mackenzie Grafton gave SAU a slight 8-7 advantage. A Saints attacking error followed by another kill from Grafton and one from Kelsey Koberg pushed the St. Ambrose lead to 11-7. St. Francis would get two points back, but Meredith Siebers put down a kill from Alex Horne, Grafton recorded two service aces, and Siebers laid down another kill for a 15-9 lead. A kill from Siebers and a USF error closed out the set.
The second set was a battle for the Bees. Leading 12-11, SAU rolled off seven straight points to take a 19-11 advantage. The Saints would not go quietly though as they would go on their own 7-0 run, to make it a 22-19 score. A Siebers kill gave St. Ambrose set point at 24-20, but St. Francis rattled off three straight points to make it 24-23. An attacking error by the Saints gave the Bees the set.
In the third with the set tied at 6-all, three straight attacking errors by the Saints gave St. Ambrose a 9-6 lead. A service ace from Adriana Diaz and a kill from Meredith Umland put the Bees up 13-8. Leading 19-14, SAU would close out the set with six straight points to win the match.
Siebers had 11 kills, Umland had 10, and Grafton put down eight. Lexi Huntley had a team-high 11 digs, while Grafton and Koberg picked up six. Grafton also recorded six aces, and Hannah Sondag had a game-high 29 assists.
The Bees will travel to Clarke on September 13th at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match.
