St. Ambrose beats Goshen at Indiana Tech Tournament

St. Ambrose women's volleyball defeated Goshen 16-25, 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 18-16 Friday night at the Indiana Tech Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Bees also competed against Concordia (MI), Indiana Southeast, and Indiana Tech at the two-day tournament.

After dropping the first set to Goshen, SAU was able to grab a 14-11 lead in the second set. The Bees rattled off four straight points to push the lead to seven. A kill from Hannah Sondag followed by a block from Meredith Umland closed out the set for St. Ambrose. In the third set with the score at six-all, once again SAU got four straight points to gain a 10-6 advantage. The lead would grow to 20-11, and a kill from Mackenzie Grafton and another block from Umland closed out the set. The Bees were unable to close out the match in the fourth, leading to the deciding fifth set. With Goshen sitting at match point at 15-14, St. Ambrose took a timeout. A Grafton block and a kill on the next two points gave SAU a 16-15 lead. Goshen would tie it up at 16, but another kill from Grafton and one from Kylie Brosius gave the Bees the five-set victory. Umland finished with 23 kills and just three errors and added four solo blocks in the win. Grafton put down 22 kills and had 18 digs. Kelsey Koberg picked up 19 digs, and Sondag provided 48 assists.

SAU dropped their first match of the tournament 13-25, 10-25, 20-25 to Concordia (MI) on Friday afternoon. Umland had six kills, and Alex Horne had five. Koberg collected 10 digs, and Skyler Kuntzman picked up eight. Sondag had 13 assists with nine digs.

On Saturday afternoon, the Bees fell 25-21, 22-25, 10-25, 23-25 to Indiana Southeast and lost 13-25, 23-25, 20-25 to Indiana Tech. Grafton had 18 kills to lead the way against Indiana Southeast. Umland had 11, and Devyn Church put down six in the match. Koberg collected 17 digs, Grafton had 12, and Kuntzman had 10. Sondag provided 30 assists. Against Indiana Tech, Umland had nine kills, and Grafton got eight. Grafton also picked up 10 digs, while Koberg and Lexi Huntley picked up eight. Sondag garnered 22 assists.

SAU will be at home on Tuesday, September 12th taking on CCAC opponent St. Francis (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
