St. Ambrose goes 2-2 at William Penn Tournament

St. Ambrose women's volleyball won two and lost two at the William Penn tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Bees (4-4) lost to William Penn in four sets and then defeated Graceland in three on Friday night. On Saturday, SAU swept Clarke then fell to Waldorf in five sets.

Against William Penn, the Bees jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set on kills from Devyn Church, Meredith Siebers, Alex Horne, and a block from Horne and Mackenzie Grafton. The Statesmen would get the set to 11-all and 12-all before taking the lead for good to win the set 20-25. SAU jumped out to an early lead again in the second set, but William Penn would battle back. WP took a 21-23 lead, but a block from Kylie Brosius and Meredith Umland plus a kill from Umland tied it at 23. After the teams traded points, kills from Siebers and Umland closed out the second set for the Bees. William Penn would win the next two sets to take the match 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 22-25. Grafton and Siebers finished with double-digit kills and digs. Grafton had 10 and 15, while Siebers put up 16 and 12. Umland recorded 15 kills, and Hannah Sondag had 44 assists and 10 digs.

In Friday's second match, St. Ambrose defeated Graceland 25-20, 25-22, and 25-19. After going down 12-6 in the first set, the Bees battled back to eventually tie at 16-all. Kills from Grafton, Horne, and Grafton gave SAU the lead for good. SAU controlled the second set but found themselves in a battle in the third. Tied at 16-all in the third, two attack errors from Graceland gave the Bees an 18-16 lead and would close out from there to take the match. Grafton finished with 12 kills, and Siebers had nine. Skyler Kuntzman recorded 10 digs, while Grafton and Adriana Diaz added nine. Sondag had 27 assists.

St. Ambrose started Saturday with another sweep, defeating Clarke 25-20, 25-20, and 25-16. After two close sets, SAU dominated the third, jumping out to a 10-5 lead. Leading 19-16, the Bees closed out the set with six straight points to take the match. Grafton had 13 kills and eight digs. Umland recorded nine kills, while Siebers had seven to go with 11 digs. Sondag posted 31 assists. Lexi Huntley also had eight digs.

SAU's final match of the tournament went five sets with the Bees falling 15-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 14-16 to Waldorf. After trading the first four sets, St. Ambrose got out to an 8-5 lead in the fifth set. The Warrior scored the next four points to take an 8-9 lead. Waldorf would have match point at 10-14, but three straight kills from Siebers and one from Umland made it 14-all. Waldorf would score the next two points to take the match. Siebers finished with a game-high 23 kills. Umland added 11, Church recorded eight, and Diaz had seven. Kuntzman had 15 digs, and Sondag recorded a season-high 49 assists.

St. Ambrose will play their first conference game on September 5th when they travel to Elgin, Ill. to take on Judson at 7 p.m
