SAU defeats CCSJ to set up showdown with SXU

St. Ambrose started a busy and important week on a good note, defeating Calumet St. Joseph 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 Monday night in Whiting, Ind.

The victory, the Bees' sixth win in a row, sets up a huge home match Tuesday when SAU (21-7, 12-2 CCAC) takes on conference-leading Saint Xavier (19-7, 14-1 CCAC). With a win Tuesday and another over Olivet Nazarene on Thursday, the Bees would earn a share of the CCAC regular-season championship.

SAU made sure the rest of the week remained important by taking care of business Monday.

Nine different Bees collected multiple kills to defeat the Crimson Wave. Jill Kavalauskas led the way with seven kills in her two sets of work. Alexandria Horne put down six kills and Meredith Umland had five.

Meredith Siebers and Mackenzie Grafton each registered four kills. Riley Epperson and Emily Pobanz had three apiece, and Kylie Brosius and Hannah Sondag each had a pair.

Macy Watkins led the team with 15 assists and matched Kavalauskas with a team-best three aces. Sondag was credited with 13 assists.

Grafton led all players with 12 digs. Maicee Pierce picked up nine, Kavalauskas had five, and Skyler Kuntzman and Lexi Huntley each added four.

Umland (five) and Horne (three) combined for eight of the team's 12 blocks.

Tuesday's battle of conference leaders is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside Lee Lohman Arena. It is also the Bees' annual Dig Pink night.
