SAU gets 10th conference victory with win at Judson

St. Ambrose improved to 18-7 overall and 10-2 in the CCAC with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-17 win at Judson Tuesday night. The Bees hit at a .303 clip, recording 44 kills against just 14 hitting errors.

After taking the first set, St. Ambrose had 18 kills and just six errors over the final two sets in earning its third straight victory.

The second set was the tightest and the Bees still led throughout. Up just 17-16, SAU got a kill and a block from Alexandria Horne before a Jill Kavalauskas kill pushed the lead to 20-16. Judson (14-16, 5-8 CCAC) fought back to within two points at 21-19 and 22-20, but each time Meredith Umland responded with a kill to restore a three-point cushion.

The Eagles made a final charge in the second, getting within 24-23. But Meredith Siebers ended the rally with a kill for a two-set lead.

St. Ambrose withstood a quick 4-1 Judson run to open the third set. Three kills from Siebers and a Macy Watkins ace came part of a 5-1 Bee spurt that put SAU in front 6-5. With the set tied at 9-9, St. Ambrose won eight of the next 10 points, behind three blocks from Umland and a pair of aces from Kavalauskas, to take control at 17-11. The Bees closed out the match by winning seven of the final eight points, the last two coming on Kavalauskas kills.

Several Bees posted big hitting numbers.

Kavalauskas had a match-high 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Siebers finished with 10 kills and a .471 mark. Umland had eight kills and hit .583. Mackenzie Grafton came up with seven kills, and Horne and Emily Pobanz each put down four.

Hannah Sondag led all players with 24 assists. Watkins was credited with 12. Kavalauskas (12) and Maicee Pierce (10) each picked up double-digit digs. Grafton came up with eight digs.

Kavalauskas registered three total aces. Grafton, Watkins and Lexi Huntley each added one.

Before closing the regular season with four conference matches over six days, beginning Saturday at Cardinal Stritch, St. Ambrose will step out of CCAC play to host Hannibal-LaGrange Thursday at 7 p.m.
