SAU sweeps Cardinal Stritch and Iowa Wesleyan

St. Ambrose earned a pair of home wins Saturday, defeating conference foe Cardinal Stritch 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 before sweeping Iowa Wesleyan 25-21, 25-22, 25-18 later in the afternoon. The sweep of Cardinal Stritch kept SAU alone in second place in the CCAC, with a 6-1 conference mark.

The Bees finished with 40 kills against just 14 hitting errors, while the Wolves posted 26 kills and 24 errors.

SAU pulled away midway through the first two sets and built a 12-4 lead early in the third. Then Cardinal Stritch (9-9, 3-4 CCAC) came to life. The Wolves tied the set at 16-16 and led by two as late as 22-20. But the Bees bounced back. A kill from Mackenzie Grafton and a block from Meredith Umland pulled the teams even at 22-22. Hannah Sondag put down a kill and Grafton followed with a solo block to give SAU a 24-22 lead. Two points later, Meredith Siebers ended the match with her eighth kill of the morning.

Jill Kavalauskas led all players with 12 kills. Alexandria Horne had six, Umland and Grafton each collected five, and Sondag added four.

Sondag had a match-high 33 assists. Maicee Pierce paced the team with 13 digs. Grafton and Kavalauskas each came up with seven. Umland totaled five blocks while Grafton and Horne had four apiece. Grafton also registered four aces.

In the second match of the day, the Bees rallied from a first-set deficit to post a three-set win.

Trailing 21-18, St. Ambrose ran off seven straight points to steal the opener. Kavalauskas and Payton Wendt each had a pair of kills during the run that gave SAU a 1-0 lead. The second and third sets were less dramatic as the Bees improved to 14-4 overall.

SAU's numbers in the win over Iowa Wesleyan nearly matched the stats from the first match. The Bees had 42 kills and 17 errors while the Tigers finished with 21 kills and 18 errors.

Riley Epperson had a match-best 10 kills. Kavalauskas had nine kills while playing just the first two sets. Wendt had eight kills, Emily Pobanz five and Grafton four. Siebers was credited with three kills in her one set of work.

Sondag ended with 34 assists and a team-high 15 digs. Kavalauskas and Epperson each had nine digs, Skyler Kuntzman picked up eight, and Isabelle Todd and Lexi Huntley had seven apiece. 

The Bees will visit conference-leading Saint Xavier (13-4, 8-0 CCAC) Tuesday night.
