Bees take 3-of-4 at Indiana Tech Tournament

St. Ambrose wrapped up a busy week by winning 3-of-4 matches at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech Friday and Saturday.

The Bees, who played six matches over the last five days, defeated Concordia (Mich.) and Goshen each in four sets Friday. They fell to host Indiana Tech in three sets before completing the weekend with a 3-0 win over Indiana Southeast.

Other than a hiccup in the second set, SAU controlled play in the 25-11, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22 win over Concordia. The Bees finished with 53 kills and a .295 hitting percentage.

Jill Kavalauskas and Mackenzie Grafton were the 1-2 punch for St. Ambrose. Kavalauskas collected 18 kills and Grafton had 13. Alexandria Horne and Meredith Siebers each had six. Meredith Umland added five.

Neenah Primas (19) and Hannah Sondag (17) combined for 36 of the team's 44 assists. Maicee Pierce led all players with 23 digs.

It was a similar story in the 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Goshen later Friday. SAU totaled 52 kills and was in control throughout.

Three Bees ended with double-digit kills. Grafton had 12 and Kavalauskas and Horne each recorded 10. Umland finished with seven and Payton Wendt added four.

Sondag collected 26 assists and 10 digs. Primas was credited with 18 assists. Lexi Huntley paced the team with 20 digs.

St. Ambrose was competitive in two of the three sets in Saturday's 25-22, 25-13, 26-24 loss to host Indiana Tech. Grafton put down 10 kills, and Kavalauskas and Horne each had six. Sondag had a team-high 13 assists and Primas added nine. Grafton also recorded 11 digs.

But the Bees bounced back to close play with a dominant 25-11, 25-23, 25-13 win over Indiana Southeast. SAU set the tone early, putting down 15 kills against just two errors, and hitting .464 as a team in the opening set.

Kavalauskas had 12 kills and Horne finished with eight. Grafton and Siebers each registered seven kills. Sondag had a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs. Pierce led the team with 14 digs.

St. Ambrose, now 10-3 overall, will return to CCAC play Tuesday with a match at Roosevelt.
