St. Ambrose rolls over Trinity Christian in home opener

St. Ambrose used a fast start to roll over Trinity Christian Tuesday night in the Bees' home opener. SAU won the first 10 points of the match on the way to a 25-14, 25-18, 26-24 victory. The win moved the Bees to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in CCAC play.

Alexandria Horne and Meredith Umland each had a pair of kills as St. Ambrose opened up that commanding 10-0 lead just minutes into the match. Kills from Mackenzie Grafton and Hannah Sondag pushed the lead to 16-3.

The Bees did little wrong in that opening set. They finished with 14 kills. They totaled just three hitting errors. And they had an answer for everything the Trolls threw at them.

Trinity Christian (1-10, 0-1 CCAC) got no closer than eight points in that first set. A Horne kill closed it out to give SAU a 1-0 lead.

The second set featured a similar start. Riley Epperson had two quick kills, Neenah Primas and Sondag each had an ace, and Meredith Siebers put down three consecutive kills to help St. Ambrose open up a 13-3 advantage.

TCC closed to within five points numerous times, the last time coming at 23-18. But a kill from Payton Wendt and a Troll hitting error squashed any further rally.

The third set was competitive throughout. Trinity Christian led late, building a 23-21 lead, and appeared poised to extend the match to at least a fourth set.

Back-to-back Troll errors knotted the set at 23-23. With the score tied at 24-24, another TCC error gave SAU its second match point, and a final Trinity miscue handed St. Ambrose the match.

The Bees received a balanced attack in the straight-sets win.

Jill Kavalauskas and Siebers each had seven kills, Umland and Emily Pobanz were each credited with six, Horne finished with five and Grafton added four. Epperson, Wendt and Kylie Brosius came up with two kills apiece.

The Bees registered 42 kills and had just 16 hitting errors to finish with a .230 hitting percentage.

Primas led the way with 20 assists with Sondag adding 14. Primas also added 10 digs, finishing second to Maicee Pierce's 17. Lexi Huntley picked up six digs.

SAU returns to action 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Indiana South Bend.
