Bees open CCAC play with five-set win at TIU

Jill Kavalauskas finished with a match-best 23 kills, but the Bees got big contributions from other sources down the stretch of a 20-25, 26-24, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12 win at Trinity International Tuesday night.

St. Ambrose broke away midway through the fifth and decisive set in the CCAC opener for both teams. Alexandria Horne had a kill to give the Bees a 13-8 lead. TIU (5-2, 0-1 CCAC) battled back with three straight points to get within 13-11. But Mackenzie Grafton recorded her 13th kill of the match to give SAU a set point, and two points later, Neenah Primas put down a kill to close out the victory.

The Bees were credited with seven kills against just two hitting errors in the final set.

St. Ambrose had three players register double-digit kills, led by Kavalauskas. Grafton finished with 13 and Horne added 11.

Kylie Brosius narrowly missed double figures, finishing with nine kills. Emily Pobanz had five and Meredith Umland collected four.

Primas led SAU with 33 assists and added 10 digs. Hannah Sondag had 20 assists and 10 digs.

Maicee Pierce paced the team with 23 digs. Kavalauskas had 11 and Grafton picked up nine.

The Bees, now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, will make their home debut next Tuesday against Trinity Christian. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
