St. Ambrose rebounds to take down Morningside 3-1

At the challenging Park Invitational, St. Ambrose took down Morningside 3-1 Saturday. The Bees earlier fell to Saint Mary (Kan.) 3-0 and No. 6 Park 3-1 over the two-day event.

SAU closed the tournament with its 26-24, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20 win over Morningside.

After splitting the first two hotly-contested sets, the Bees controlled the final two. Over those last sets, St. Ambrose came up with 23 kills and just eight errors, good for a .227 hitting percentage.

Jill Kavalauskas led SAU with 16 kills. She had just three hitting errors. Mackenzie Grafton put down 13 kills, Emily Pobanz had eight, Alexandria Horne finished with six and Meredith Umland added five.

Neenah Primas had a team-best 28 assists with Hannah Sondag chipping in with 14.

Maicee Pierce led all players with 29 digs. Three other Bees - Primas (12), Grafton (10), Lexi Huntley (10) - also reached double figures.

The win came on the heels of a 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-11 loss to nationally-ranked Park.

Kavalauskas and Park each collected 13 kills. Sondag (16) and Primas (12) led the team in assists. Pierce picked up 25 digs and Kavalauskas added 18.

St. Ambrose opened the event Friday with a tight 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 loss to Saint Mary.

Kavalauskas was the lone Bee to record double-digit kills, finishing with 13. Primas had 16 assists and Pierce was credited with nine digs.

SAU will open conference play Tuesday with a match at Trinity International.
