SAU gets victory in regular-season home finale

With the postseason around the corner, St. Ambrose closed out the home portion of the regular season with a 3-1 win over Trinity Christian Thursday night in Lee Lohman Arena. Scores were 26-24, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21.

The Bees got the victory despite a few scares, including one in the opening set.

After grabbing a seemingly-comfortable 23-17 lead on a Jill Kavalauskas kill, St. Ambrose went silent. The Trolls won seven of the next eight points, with the lone Bee point coming on another Kavalauskas kill, to even the set at 24-24. SAU caught a break when a Trinity Christian serving error handed the team a set point, and the Bees capitalized with Meredith Siebers putting down a kill to escape with the opening set.

St. Ambrose (17-11, 9-7 CCAC) upped its play in the second. The Bees used a six-point run, sparked by two quick kills from Rachael Dion, to break a 9-9 tie. Minutes later, a 5-0 run pushed the advantage to 21-11 and St. Ambrose cruised through the rest of the set.

Trinity (8-20, 4-12 CCAC) made thing interesting in the third. SAU built a 16-14 lead but struggled from there. The Trolls took the lead for good, and despite the Bees getting within 24-23 late, they forced the match into a fourth set.

TCC won the first three points of the fourth and the set was tied as late as 12-12. Meredith Umland and Kavalauskas had back-to-back kills for a 14-12 lead. The lead ballooned to 24-16 on a Dion ace before the Trolls made a final push. Five straight points cut the margin to 24-21, but following a Bee timeout, Jessie Hemm put down a kill to wrap up the win.

Kavalauskas finished with a match-high 17 kills to go along with nine digs. Siebers had a double-double of 12 kills and 17 digs. Dion, Mackenzie Grafton and Payton Wendt each recorded seven kills.

Amber Tomlin paced all players with 40 assists. She also collected 11 digs. Maicee Pierce picked up 12 digs. Wendt was involved in eight total blocks.

The Bees will wrap up the regular season on the road with matches at Calumet St. Joseph next Tuesday and at Roosevelt next Thursday before the CCAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal-round action on Nov. 9.
