SAU defeats Calumet St. Joseph 3-0

The night before hosting conference-leading Indiana South Bend, St. Ambrose took care of business by defeating Calumet St. Joseph in three sets Thursday in Lee Lohman Arena. The Bees won 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 to move to 13-8 overall and 5-5 in the CCAC.

SAU overwhelmed CCSJ, finishing with 46 kills and just 13 hitting errors. Calumet (3-17, 0-8 CCAC) totaled 28 kills and 12 errors.

The Bees were challenged in a competitive second set. The Crimson Wave led throughout the set, taking an 18-14 lead late. But two kills from Jill Kavalauskas and another from Meredith Siebers came part of a 6-1 run that gave the Bees a 20-19 lead. Nursing a 22-21 advantage, St. Ambrose capitalized on a pair of Calumet hitting errors before Siebers closed it out with a kill.

Siebers, Mackenzie Grafton and Kavalauskas had kills on the first three points of what proved to be the final set and SAU extended the lead from there to close out the 3-0 victory.

Kavalauskas and SIebers each reached double-digits in kills, finishing with 14 and 10, respectively. Grafton and Meredith Umland each put down seven. Emily Pobanz collected five kills and Jessie Hemm added three.

Amber Tomlin led all players with 21 assists. Hannah Sondag was credited with 16.

Isabelle Todd had a match-high 20 digs in the win.

The victory sets up a big match with IU South Bend Friday at 7 p.m. The Titans (13-3) lead the CCAC with a perfect 9-0 league mark. They knocked the Bees out of the CCAC Tournament quarterfinals last season and already have a win over the Bees this fall.
