Kavalauskas named to all-tourney team as Bees win four at Eutectics Classic

St. Ambrose won all four of its matches at the two-day Eutectics Classic hosted by the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) in St. Louis Friday and Saturday.

The Bees defeated Cottey College 25-13, 25-14, 25-18 and Iowa Wesleyan 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 Friday before completing the perfect weekend with a 24-26, 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 win over Friends and a 25-17, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15 victory over UHSP Saturday.

The wins moved St. Ambrose to 10-5 on the season.

SAU got off to a fast start. The Bees had 34 kills and just nine hitting errors in the 3-0 win over Cottey.

Jill Kavalauskas (10) and Meredith Siebers (6) combined for 16 kills and not a single hitting error. Meredith Umland had five kills, and Mackenzie GraftonLondon Williams and Payton Wendt each had three kills.

Hannah Sondag was credited with 22 assists while Lexi Huntley recorded four. Maicee Pierce had a team-high 16 digs. St. Ambrose also finished with 15 aces. Pierce and Sondag each had four while Siebers and Umland had two apiece.

After hitting .333 as a team against Cottey, the Bees upped their game against Iowa Wesleyan. The team totaled 51 kills and just 10 errors to hit .427 in the second 3-0 win of the day Friday.

Rachael Dion had the top mark, putting down 15 kills without an error in 18 attempts. Wendt had nine kills and no errors in 10 swings. Kavalauskas finished with 12 kills. Grafton had five and Umland finished with four.

Sondag again led the team with 31 assists and Huntley added 11. Pierce picked up 21 digs. Seven different Bees had an ace.

St. Ambrose faced its first test of the weekend after dropping the first set to Friends Saturday. But SAU responded by allowing just 45 total points over the final three sets.

Siebers had a match-high 14 kills while Grafton and Kavalauskas reached double figures with 10 kills each. Dion recorded nine kills and six of the team's nine total blocks.

Sondag had 42 assists and four players - Pierce (11), Kavalauskas (11), Grafton (10) and Siebers (10) - had double-digit digs.

The Bees continued their balanced attack to close out play with the four-set win over UHSP. Kavalauskas and Siebers each registered 13 kills, Umland had nine and Grafton finished with seven.

Sondag handed out 35 assists and collected 12 digs. Pierce paced the team with 16 digs.

For her efforts, Kavalauskas was named to the all-tournament team. She had 45 kills, 19 digs and seven aces over 13 sets.

SAU returns to CCAC play with a conference match at Indiana Northwest Tuesday.
