Bees get first CCAC win with sweep of Trolls

St. Ambrose collected 46 kills in sweeping Trinity Christian 25-16, 25-15, 25-22 in Palos Heights, Ill., Tuesday night. It was the Bees' first win over the Trolls since the 2012 season and the first 3-0 win since 2011.

SAU got some big numbers across the board in moving to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the CCAC.

Jill Kavalauskas put down 17 kills. Mackenzie Grafton had 10 kills. Rachael Dion finished with eight and just one hitting error. Meredith Umland (six) and Meredith Siebers (five) combined for 11 kills.

Those five Bees recorded all 46 kills for the team and combined for just 13 hitting errors. St. Ambrose hit .302 as a team.

It was Dion who helped SAU break away in the opening set. With the set knotted at 15-15, Dion had two kills as part of a 5-0 run that opened a 20-15 lead. After a Troll point, the Bees pieced together another five-point run to take the first set, with Kavalauskas wrapping things up with back-to-back aces.

Kavalauskas and Grafton each had two early kills to stake St. Ambrose to an 11-4 lead in the second. Trinity Christian (1-3, 0-2 CCAC) got to within five points at 17-12, but a Dion kill and a block from Umland and Amber Tomlin started an 8-3 spurt that extended the lead to 2-0.

SAU led throughout the third set but things got interesting late. The Trolls closed to within a single point three times down the stretch, the final time coming at 22-21. Dion restored a two-point advantage with her eighth kill of the night. A Trinity hitting error upped the lead to 24-21, and one point later, Kavalauskas ended the match with her 17th kill.

Tomlin was credited with 37 assists in the victory. Maicee Pierce led all players with 17 digs. Grafton added eight, Kavalauskas and Siebers each had seven, and Tomlin and Jessie Hemm had four apiece.

The Bees will next visit Indiana South Bend Thursday.
