St. Ambrose falls in five in CCAC Tournament quarterfinals

Despite four Bees collecting double-digit kills, St. Ambrose saw its season come to an end in a heartbreaking 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 14-16 loss at Indiana South Bend in the quarterfinals of the CCAC Tournament Tuesday night.

Jill Kavalauskas had a match-high 21 kills, and Meredith Siebers (15), Rachael Dion (14) and Jessica Hemm (13) combined for 32 more in a back-and-forth match between the tournament's fourth and fifth seeds.

Unable to close out the match in four, the Bees were forced to rally from an early deficit in the fifth as the Titans won five of the first eight points. The SAU deficit remained three points as late as 10-7. But kills from Siebers, Dion and Hemm drew the teams even at 10-10.

The teams exchanged the next four points and SAU grabbed its first lead of the set at 13-12 on a block from Hemm and Amber Tomlin. The Bees then earned the first match point of the night at 14-13 on a Megan Mitchell kill. But after several lengthy rallies, that proved to be the final point of the night for St. Ambrose. The Titans won the next three points to advance.

Payton Wendt nearly gave SAU a fifth player in double figures as she finished with eight kills.

Along with six kills, Tomlin dished out 66 assists, giving her 2,036 assists in her three-year Bee career. She also picked up 21 digs.

Maicee Pierce was credited with 24 digs, Kavalauskas had 22 and Mitchell added 11 in the loss.

Indiana South Bend (13-5) will visit top-seed Olivet Nazarene in a semifinal Thursday night. Trinity Christian will host Cardinal Stritch in the other semifinal. The CCAC Tournament championship match will be played Saturday.
