SAU gets win on Senior Night

Playing in their regular-season home finale, St. Ambrose honored three members - Alexis Hayes, Mickey Hayes, and Lauren Vorva - before defeating Indiana Northwest 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-17 Tuesday night inside Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees fell behind early in the first set. Down 21-17, SAU got a kill from Mickey Hayes, two from Meredith Siebers, and a service ace from Serina Cannon to force a Redhawk timeout. The teams would then trade kills and after an IU-Northwest error, St. Ambrose was only down 23-22. The Bees closed out the match with three straight points on an ace from Siebers and kills from Jill Kavalauskas and Siebers.

Both teams went point for point in the second set until four straight attacking errors from the Bees gave the Redhawks a 10-6 lead. SAU would battle back, only down two late in the set after kills from Kavalauskas and Vorva. IU-Northwest would eventually close out the set on a 3-0 run.

St. Ambrose raced out to an early lead in the third, taking a commanding 11-5 lead with kills from Payton Wendt and London Williams. Cannon would add another ace to push the lead to nine points, and Williams would close out the set with another kill.

The fourth was much of the same for the Bees as they took an early 12-4 lead after kills from Mickey Hayes, Kavalauskas, Amber Tomlin, and Rachael Dion. SAU grew their lead to 11, but the Redhawks would go on a 5-0 run to force a timeout from St. Ambrose. Coming out of the timeout, Kavalauskas would put down another kill for a 23-16 lead. After a point from the visitors, Dion and Siebers put down kills of their own to give SAU the win.

Siebers finished with 17 kills and Kavalauskas was close behind with 16. Dion, Mickey Hayes, and Wendt each added six. Tomlin led all players with 45 assists. Four Bees collected double-digit digs - Siebers (19), Tomlin (16), Kavalauskas (15), and Alexis Hayes (14).

SAU will play their final regular-season game on April 1st, traveling to Elgin, Ill. to take on Judson University at 7 p.m.
