Kavalauskas sets record in loss at Governors State

It was a record-setting night for Jill Kavalauskas.

The junior registered 31 kills, setting a record for most kills by an opposing player against Governors State and also establishing a new GSU arena record. Even more impressively, she accomplished this while committing just five hitting errors. She ended with a .473 hitting percentage.

Unfortunately for Kavalauskas, it all came in a 25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 19-17 loss.

The Bees had their chances.

After forcing a decisive fifth set, SAU led 14-12. They were the first two of four match points the Bees failed to convert. London Williams gave St. Ambrose its last chance, putting down a kill for a 17-16 lead. But three straight Jaguar kills wrapped up the match.

The loss ruined a dominating performance from Kavalauskas. After collecting five kills in the opening set, she had eight, against no hitting errors, in the second. She registered seven more in the third. When the Bees needed it the most, Kavalauskas came through. She had five kills and no errors in the fourth and had six kills, again without an error, in the final set.

Her 31 kills are the most by a Bee since Amy Royer had 32 in a five-set match against William Woods on Oct. 8, 2010.

Meredith Siebers finished with 16 kills Thursday. Williams added eight while Rachael Dion and Jessica Hemm each had four.

Amber Tomlin posted a match-best 52 assists to go along with 16 digs and three kills.

Siebers led all players with 17 digs and Kavalauskas had 12. Maicee Pierce recorded eight digs and Alexis Hayes added six.

Serina Cannon had three of the team's seven aces.

The Bees, now 13-8 overall and 8-6 in the CCAC, will visit Saint Xavier Saturday.
