St. Ambrose runs winning streak to four

St. Ambrose overcame a bit of a slow start to take down Indiana Northwest 25-22, 25-12, 25-20 Tuesday night in Gary, Ind.

The win was the Bees' fourth in a row and improved their record to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the CCAC.

SAU got the three-set win despite falling behind 16-10 in the opening set. Back-to-back kills from Meredith Siebers helped spark a six-point run. Payton Wendt followed with a kill and Amber Tomlin had an ace that helped the Bees draw even with the Redhawks at 16-16.

IUNW (3-5, 3-5) took its last lead at 21-20. After a Redhawk serving error, Siebers and Jessica Hemm came up with consecutive blocks to put SAU in front 23-21. Jill Kavalauskas got an ace to up the lead to 24-21, and a Siebers kill two points later, closed out the set.

There was no need for a St. Ambrose rally in the second set. With the score tied at 7-7, Kavalauskas sandwiched kills around single kills from Rachael Dion and Tomlin to give SAU an 11-7 lead. That was part of a larger 12-3 spurt that gave the Bees a 19-10 lead, on their way to a two-set lead.

SAU won seven of the first nine points in the third and never looked back. The Redhawks got to as close as two points as late as 11-9, but kills from Kavalauskas and Siebers immediately reopened up a four-point advantage. The Bees weren't seriously threatened from there.

Kavalauskas and Siebers shared match-high honors with 12 kills apiece. Dion added seven and Wendt registered three.

Tomlin led all players with 34 assists and had four of the team's seven aces. She was also credited with eight digs.

Kavalauskas also paced the team with 15 digs. Maicee Pierce picked up 14.

The Bees will look to extend their winning streak Thursday when they host Judson at 7 p.m.
