SAU improves to 2-0 in CCAC play with win at Roosevelt

The Bees came up big down the stretch in each set in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 win at Roosevelt Tuesday night. The 3-0 victory moved St. Ambrose to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCAC.

SAU set the tone early. Leading 21-19 in the first set, Jill Kavalauskas collected back-to-back kills to give the Bees some breathing room. After Roosevelt (0-2, 0-2 CCAC) won a point to get within 23-20, Kavalauskas put down another kill before Meredith Siebers ended the set with a kill of her own.

In the second, the lead was just 22-21. But a Rachael Dion kill sparked a three-point run, with Siebers again closing the set with a kill, to give St. Ambrose a two-set lead.

The third set followed a similar storyline. The Bees actually trailed 22-21 before two Kavalauskas kills gave SAU a 23-22 advantage. The teams traded errors before Kavaluaskas closed out the win with her 13th kill of the match.

Siebers shared match-high honors with 13 kills of her own. Dion added four kills and Riley Epperson had two. Five other Bees - Amber Tomlin, Jessica Hemm, Emily Pobanz, Alexis Hayes and Isabelle Todd - each had one kill.

Tomlin (17) and Hannah Sondag (10) combined for 27 of the team's 35 assists.

Maicee Pierce led all players with 12 digs, while Kavalauskas reached double figures with 10 of her own.

The Bees will look to move to 3-0 in the conference for the first time since the 2017 team opened with five straight CCAC wins Thursday when they visit Cardinal Stritch.
