Bees return to court and open CCAC play with win

Returning to the court for the first time since wrapping up the fall portion of their schedule with two wins on Halloween, the Bees continued their winning ways with a 3-0 win over Calumet St. Joseph Thursday night.

The CCAC-opening 25-12, 25-21, 25-11 victory moved St. Ambrose to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

SAU dominated throughout, with 17 players seeing the court. The tone was set early as the Bees raced to a 9-3 lead behind three kills from Meredith Siebers in the opening set. London Williams, Jill Kavalauskas and Jessica Hemm also had kills in the fast start.

The lead ballooned to 21-9 on another Siebers kill, her fifth of the set, and Kavalauskas closed it out with a kill.

The Bees jumped to an 11-3 lead in the second behind the serving of Kavalauskas and Serina Cannon. The pair combined for three aces in the early stages of the set. Calumet St. Joseph (0-1, 0-1) made things interesting, getting to within two points at 23-21. But a serving error and an attack error from the Crimson Wave gave the Bees a two-set lead.

Three Amber Tomlin aces helped St. Ambrose to a 7-0 lead in the third set. The lead grew to 10-1 a few points later and the Bees cruised to the three-set win.

Kavalauskas led SAU with nine kills. Siebers finished with eight and just one hitting error. Williams put down five kills, Hemm had four, and Riley Epperson and Mickey Hayes each added three.

Tomlin led all players with 16 assists. Hannah Sondag collected nine.

Maicee Pierce registered a team-high 11 digs to go along with five assists. Sondag was credited with eight digs and Alexis Hayes added five.

St. Ambrose will next visit Roosevelt Tuesday night.
