St. Ambrose drops two in Dubuque

St. Ambrose fell to 3-2 on the year after losing a pair of matches in Dubuque, Iowa, Saturday.

The Bees fell to host Clarke 3-1 before dropping their second match of the day to Northwestern-St. Paul 3-0.

SAU won just one set against Clarke in the 25-11, 26-24, 20-25, 25-14 setback, but the team nearly had two. The Bees led the second 24-20 after a Jill Kavalauskas kill, but the Crusaders rallied with six straight points to claim the set.

St. Ambrose recovered to take the third but fell behind 9-2 and never really challenged Clarke in the fourth.

Meredith Siebers led a balanced attack with eight kills. Kavalauskas and Rachael Dion each had seven, and Jessica Hemm and MacKenzie Gropel each posted four.

Gropel also led the team with 16 assists while Hannah Sondag recorded eight. Maicee Pierce collected a team-best 13 digs.

Turning around immediately to play again, St. Ambrose offered little resistance in a 25-15, 25-21, 25-12 loss to Northwestern-St. Paul.

Kavalauskas again led the way, this time finishing with seven kills. Siebers and Hemm each put down six. Dion had four and Riley Epperson picked up three.

Sondag finished with 11 assists, Amber Tomlin had eight and Gropel recorded six. Alexis Hayes (eight) and Tomlin (seven) combined for 15 of the team's 36 digs.

St. Ambrose will compete in a triangular at Lincoln College next Saturday. The Bees will face Lincoln at 11 a.m. and Maranatha Baptist Bible College at 1 p.m.
