St. Ambrose to compete at 2023 Outdoor Track & Field Nationals

Several Bees will compete at the 2023 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships from May 24 to May 26. The Championships will be hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.

Things will get started for St. Ambrose at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday with the men's 4x100-meter relay prelims. Nik Norton, Will Reemtsma, Austin Kalar, and Yemi Ward will race for SAU. Katie Lambrecht will compete in the prelims of the women's 400-meter hurdles at 3:30 p.m. Reemstma will follow in the men's 400-meter hurdles at 3:55 p.m. Reemstma is the defending National Champion in the event. At 4:20 p.m., Gabbi Butler will race in the women's 200-meter prelims, and Nolan Rudd will wrap up the first day for SAU in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:55 p.m. Rudd earned All-American status in the event last season.

Annah Miller will kick things off for St. Ambrose on Thursday with the women's shot put at 1:30 p.m. Butler will follow, running in the women's 400-meter prelims at 3 p.m. Mick Saloninas and Jonah Wilson will compete in the men's discus at 5:30 p.m. The day for the Bees will end at 7:15 p.m. when Lambrecht, Butler, Megan Jansett, and Jadie Knecht run in the women's 4x400-meter relay prelims.

Friday will be the third and final day for SAU at Nationals. Miller will again get things started, competing in the women's discus at noon. Miller earned All-American honors in the event last year. At 2 p.m., Saloninas and Wilson will throw in the men's shot put. Saloninas finished runner-up in the event a season ago. Finals will be taking place this day for any athletes that made it out of prelims.

Day 1, Wednesday, May 24th - RECAP

The foursome of Nik Norton, Will Reemtsma, Austin Kalar, and Yemi Ward set a new school record in the men's 4x100m relay. The Bees posted a time of 41.05 which put them 18th in the field. 

Sophomore Katie Lambrecht competed in the women's 400m hurdles and posted a time of 1:08.98. 


Will Reemtsma will continue his title defense in the men's 400m hurdles as the senior posted the highest qualifying time in the semifinals with a 51.37.

Gabbi Butler posted a 24.88 in the women's 200 meters, which was good enough for 20th in the nation. 


Nolan Rudd also qualified for finals in the men's 3000m steeplechase. The senior qualified with a time of 9:26:14. 

Day 2, Thursday, May 25th - RECAP

Annah Miller made finals in the women's shot put. Miller recorded throws of 12.96m, 12.86m, and 13.89m in her flight. In finals, her best throw came on her fifth attempt a mark of 13.91m, an outdoor PR for Miller. The throw placed the junior ninth in the NAIA. 

Gabbi Butler punched her ticket to finals in the women's 400 meters after qualifying in fifth with a time of 55.85. 

Jonah Wilson and Mick Saloninas competed in the men's discus. Wilson had his best throw of the day on his first attempt - 44.29m. He also had throws of 42.80m and 43.47. Saloninas saved his best throw for last, firing a 48.05m mark on his third attempt. He also had a throw of 46.20m. Saloninas came in 14th place, and Wilson finished in 25th. 

Megan Jansett, Butler, Jadie Knecht, and Paige Crippes posted a 4:08:46 time in the women's 4x400 meter relay. 

Day 3, Friday, May 26th - RECAP

Nolan Rudd competed in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase finals. The senior bested his semifinal time, finishing the race in 9:24:52 to put him 10th in the NAIA. 

Annah Miller came in 11th place in the women's discus. The junior had throws of 38.41m and 38.75m before her final throw of the day at 43.22m. 

Will Reemstma defended his title in the men's 400 meter hurdles. The senior claimed the National Title with a time of 50.84. 

Gabbi Butler earned All-American honors in the women's 400 meters. The final had two heats - Butler was in the first wave and finished first in her heat with a time of 55.46. After the second heat, Butler came out as the fifth fastest in the NAIA and earned four points for the SAU women.

Mick Saloninas earned All-American status in the men's shot put, placing seventh. His second attempt of the day, a throw of 16.40m, was good enough to be on the podium. He also had throws of 14.95m and 16.37m. Jonah Wilson also competed in the event, garnering throws of 15.70m, 15.47m, and 15.97m to finish 11th in the NAIA.
