Bees ready for NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships

St. Ambrose is sending a large contingent to the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Brookings, S.D. Competition gets underway Thursday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and runs through Saturday.

A total of 16 Bees will compete, nine on the men's side and seven for the women.

SAU will have three men competing in the shot put. Mick Saloninas is currently ranked fifth in the event with a top throw of 17.01 meters this season. Jonah Wilson (16.71m) is ranked seventh and Alec Seifert (16.07m) is 12th. Another Bee thrower - Payton Woods - will compete in the weight throw. He is 22nd with a top mark of 16.97 meters.

Will Reemtsma will compete in a pair of individual events. He is eighth in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 48.35 seconds. He will also race in the 200-meter dash, where he is currently 22nd on the performance list with a time of 21.77 seconds. Nolan Rudd is eighth in the 3000-meter run, entering with a time of 8:29.48. Yemi Ward, the school record holder with a top time of 6.91 seconds, will compete in the 60-meter dash. Reemtsma and Rudd will be joined by Luke Benes and Kale Cartee as part of the distance medley relay team.

Katie Lambrecht will get things started for the St. Ambrose women. She will compete in the pentathlon beginning at noon Thursday. She earned a top score of 3173 this season. Annah Miller has the women's team top seed, entering the shot put ranked fifth with a best throw of 14.36 meters. Gabbi Butler is eighth in the 400-meter dash with a qualifying time of 56.74 seconds. Lexie Johnson is tied for 15th in the NAIA in the long jump with a season-best jump of 5.63 meters. Ryleigh Warden will compete in the pole vault, which she enters with a top mark of 3.52 meters. Butler and Lambrecht will also join Megan Jansett and Megan Becker in the 4x400-meter relay.

Saturday, March 4

The NAIA Championships ended with another school record in an All-American finish. Nolan Rudd set a lifetime PR and earned a spot on the podium with a school-record time of 8:30.34 in the men's 3000-meter run. That was good for eighth place. It bettered his own school record of 8:33.99 set Friday in the prelims.

The Bees had four competitors in the shot put. Jonah Wilson was 10th with a throw of 16.01 meters to lead three SAU men in the event. Mick Saloninas placed 11th with a toss of 15.77 meters. Alec Seifert was 14th with a mark of 15.25 meters. Annah Miller also placed 14th on the women's side. She had a best throw of 13.35 meters.

Friday, March 3

Records continued to fall for the Bees Friday. Gabbi Butler set a school record in the women's 400-meter dash. Her time of 56.64 seconds bettered the previous mark of 57.37 seconds set in 2016. It also placed her ninth in the country. And Nolan Rudd set a new school mark in the men's 3000-meter run. His time of 8:33.99 shaved 0.60 seconds off his previous St. Ambrose record set earlier this season. The time was also good for 11th place in the prelims and earned him a spot in Saturday's finals.

Will Reemtsma competed in a pair of prelims Friday. He ended 11th in the 400-meter dash in 48.39 seconds and took 36th in the 200-meter dash in 22.46 seconds. Ryleigh Warden finished in a tie for 26th with a mark of 3.27 meters in the pole vault. Payton Woods was 30th in the weight throw with a distance of 15.90 meters. Yemi Ward's time of 6.97 seconds was good for 34th in the 60-meter dash. Lexie Johnson also competed in the long jump for the Bees.

Thursday, March 2

St. Ambrose got off to a record-breaking start at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Gabbi Butler, Katie Lambrecht, Megan Jansett and Megan Becker combined to break the school record in the women's 4x400-meter relay. Their time of 3:55.92 broke the previous mark of 3:57.47 set in 2015 and was good for 15th place. Lambrecht also took 14th in the pentathlon, earning 3,122 points. The men's distance medley relay team of Luke Benes, Will Reemtsma, Kale Cartee and Nolan Rudd finished 19th in 10:15.71.
