St. Ambrose gets indoor season off to a strong start

St. Ambrose couldn't have gotten the 2022 indoor season off to a better start. School records, National-qualifying marks and numerous event champions highlighted the Fighting Bees' day at the season-opening Frigid Bee Invitational at the WRC Saturday.

Will Reemtsma and Gabbi Butler each set school records.

Reemstma and teammate Ben Wilson each bettered the previous school record in the men's 300m run. Reemstma won in a time of 35.16 seconds and Wilson was second in 35.53 to rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in the NAIA this season. Joseph Torres held the school reord with a time of 36.16 seconds.

Butler broke SAU mark in the women's 300m run, winning the event in 42.04 seconds. That eclipsed Ebonie Butler's previous record of 43.17 seconds and is currently the sixth-best mark in the NAIA.

Butler helped the St. Ambrose women win the meet with 109 total points. The Bees outlasted second-place William Penn (99 points) in the nine-team competition.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Megan Becker, Katie Lambrecht, Megan Jansett and Butler hit the NAIA B standard with a time of 4:02.19, good for second place.

Jansett won an individual event, claiming the 600m run in 1:43.04. Alexis Andersen won the triple jump with a mark of 10.64 meters and Lexie Johnson won the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters.

Paige Crippes set a pair of PRs Saturday. She scored with a third-place time of 27.13 seconds in the 200m dash and with a fourth-place time of 8.16 seconds in the 60m dash.

The Bee men took second to William Penn with 120.5 team points.

Mick Saloninas and Jonah Wilson both punched their tickets to Nationals with A standards in the shot put. Saloninas won with a throw of 17.01 meters and Wilson was the runner-up with an effort of 16.20 meters.

Payton Woods hit the B standard in the weight throw with a third-place toss of 16.34 meters.

David Arney won the triple jump with a mark of 12.70 meters. Ben Wilson, Cody Thole, Jonny Swarm and Reemtsma combined to win the men's 4x400m relay in 3:25.13.

St. Ambrose will host the Finals Week Invite in the WRC next Friday and Saturday.
