Bees continue strong start at Finals Week Invite

The St. Ambrose indoor track & field teams kept their seasons rolling this weekend when they hosted Mount Mercy and St. Francis (Ill.) at the Finals Week Invite in Davenport, Iowa. The meet kicked off with the multi-events on Friday, followed by the main track and field events on Saturday.

Women's Meet

St. Ambrose junior Madalyn Oltman competed for the Bees in the pentathlon on Friday, placing second amongst collegiate competition with a total of 2180 points.

On Saturday, Paige Crippes and Anna Possehl got the Bees off to a quick start in the 60m dash, placing third (8.48) and fifth (8.78), respectively. Jadie Knect and Gabbi Butler both scored points for their performances in the 200m dash, with Knecht winning bronze (27.68). Butler added a bronze medal of her own in the 400m dash (1:05.95) while Lambrecht took silver (1:01.28). Megan Jansett was the top runner in the 600m dash (1:42.69) and Anna Pierce placed fourth (2:01.77).

Rileigh Fortune and Becca Neaterour both claimed points for the Bees in the 1-mile run, with Fortune finishing in fourth (6:50.39) and Neaterour in fifth (7:00.65). Leah Rose showed her prowess in the hurdle lanes, collecting silver in the 60m hurdles (9.42). St. Ambrose rounded out their day on the track with a top finish in the 4x400 relay (4:12.37), run by Jansett, Lambrecht, Knecht, and Karissa Koval.

Lily Olsen had a great day in the field events, collecting three medals in three jumping events. Olsen cleared 1.40m in the high jump to tie for silver with her teammate Olivia Sobieszczyk, jumped to a 4.88m mark to win bronze in the long jump, and then hit a 10.27m mark in the triple jump to win silver. Hana Hart placed fifth in the long jump (4.30m) and Rose placed third in the triple jump (10.06m). Tara Ryan was the lone competitor in the pole vault, clearing 2.80m.

Annah Miller placed second in the shot put (12.05m) and Anna Dunne placed fourth (10.80m). Dunne also placed fifth in the weight throw (10.50m) while Felica McCroy placed sixth (10.30m).

The St. Ambrose women's team collected 110 points on the weekend to finish just one point shy of meet-winner St. Francis (Ill.), who finished with 111.

Men's Meet

Cody Thole got things started for the Fighting Bees in Friday's heptathlon, scoring a total of 3558 points in the seven events to place fourth.

St. Ambrose swept the podium in the shot put, with Mick Saloninas launching a meet-best 16.49m throw to win gold. Jonah Wilson took silver at 14.46m and Alec Seifert took bronze at 14.42m. St. Ambrose added some more hardware in the weight throw, with Payton Woods winning silver (14.92m) and Hunter Kasap taking bronze (14.48m).

Freshman Teagan Bowers was a standout in the jumping events, winning gold in both the long jump and triple jump. Bowers hit a 6.41m mark in the long jump and a 12.48m mark in the triple jump. Justin Griser, Isaac Mojica, and Simon Holland all tallied points in the high jump, with Griser placing second (1.76m), Mojica in third (J1.76m), and Holland taking fourth (1.71m). Mojica was also the top competitor in the pole vault after clearing 3.27m.

On the track, Will Reynolds and Andrew Olenek kicked things off in the 60m dash, going third (7.06) and fourth (7.13), respectively. Nate Kieper placed fourth (23.09) and Bowers placed eighth (23.97) in the 200m dash. Will Reemtsma qualified for nationals in the 400m dash at the Finals Week Invite, running to a time of 49.84 to finish first among collegiate competition. Ben Wilson was just behind Reemtsma at 52.43. Reemtsma also had the top time in the 60m hurdles at 8.56. Will Kruse finished right behind Reemtsma at 8.67.

Some familiar faces from the men's cross country team took on the distance events for the Fighting Bees. Kale Cartee and Tommy Ashby competed in the 1-mile run, with Cartee placing fifth (4:42.34) and Ashby placing sixth (4:52.21), while Nolan Rudd and Matt Jung raced in the 3000m, with Rudd placing fourth (9:04.86) and Jung a split-second behind in fifth (9:04.87).

St. Ambrose wrapped up their meet with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay (3:28.82), run by Wilson, Reemtsma, Jonny Swarm, and Thole.

The St. Ambrose men's team won the Finals Week Invite with a team score of 127 points. St. Francis (Ill.) finished as the runner-up with 86 points.

The St. Ambrose indoor track & field teams will now have a month off for the holidays. They will return to competition on Jan. 15 when they host the Battle in the Hive on the campus of St. Ambrose University.
