Women take third, men finish as runner-up at CCAC Championships

The St. Ambrose track and field teams both finished in the top three of the conference this weekend when they hosted the CCAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Davenport, Iowa. The Bees hosted teams from eight other CCAC schools: Cardinal Stritch, Calumet St. Joseph, Judson, Lincoln, Olivet Nazarene, St. Francis (Ill.), Saint Xavier and Trinity Christian. The women finished in third place overall with 109 points, falling short of St. Francis (Ill.) in second place with 138 points and CCAC champions Olivet Nazarene with 301 points. The men finished as conference runner-up with 148 points, tying their highest finish as a team at the CCAC Indoor Championships. The men were shy of the meet-best 252 points from Olivet Nazarene.

St. Ambrose junior Leah Rose had a fantastic day on the track, finishing as conference runner-up in the 60m hurdles (9.25), twelve-hundredths of a second behind Olivet's Linda Griffith who set a CCAC championship record (9.13). Rose also tallied three points in the 60m dash, finishing in sixth place (8.32), as well as a ninth-place finish in the 200m dash (27.69).

Rose was accompanied by her teammate Hana Hart in the 60m hurdles. Hart bolted to a seventh-place finish with a time of 10.47.

Megan Jansett followed up on her Conference Athlete of the Week honors from a week ago with a strong meet at the CCAC Championships, taking the silver in the 400m dash (1:00.10). Jansett also finished seventh in the 200m dash to score two points for her team.

Right behind Jansett in the 400m dash was freshman Jadie Knecht, who finished fourth with a time of 1:03.61.

Also running in the 200m dash for the Bees were Anna Possehl in 21st-place (30.46) and Alexis Oliver in 23rd-place (31.70).

Anna Pierce and Carrington Curphy ran the 600m run for St. Ambrose. Pierce finished 17th (2:04.32) and Curphy finished 18th (2:04.65).

Emma Duncan was the lone Bee in the 1000m run. Duncan captured the bronze with a quick time of 3:11.74.

St. Ambrose sophomore standout Michaela Pieroni had a record-setting day at the CCAC Championships. Pieroni won gold in the 5000m run with a school-record time of 17:54.29, eclipsing Becca Wilder's record of 18:19.65 set in 2015. Pieroni's time is also the 10th ranked time in the NAIA. Pieroni shared the podium with her teammate Megan Grady, who captured bronze with a time of 18:23.33. Also running for the Bees in the 5000m was Jessica Mendenhall, finishing sixth (19:58.55) and scoring three points.

The same trio also took on the 3000m run for the Bees, along with St. Ambrose's Emma Duncan. Pieroni took fifth (10:33.22), Grady finished eighth (10:50.92), Duncan placed ninth (11:03.23) and Mendenhall finished 14th (11:48.26).

St. Ambrose took bronze in the women's 4x400 relay, running Megan JansettJadie KnechtClaire Duncan and MacKenzie Clary (4:23.25).

The Bees finished sixth in the women's 4x800 relay. Claire DuncanAnna PierceCarrington Curphy and Tara Ryan carried the baton for St. Ambrose (11:28.62).

Abby Camp mirrored her award-winning performance from a year ago at the CCAC Indoor Championships, finding the podium in both of her events. Camp took the gold in the long jump with a meet-best 5.31m jump, as well as a bronze-medal finish in the triple jump (10.49m).

Camp was joined by Leah Rose in the long jump, who jumped to a fourth-place finish with a 5.14m mark.

Mickey Hayes had a strong showing in the high jump, placing fourth after clearing 1.55m. Hayes placed fourth following the judge's decision. Liliana Olsen tied for seventh (1.45m) and Brooke Hass tied for 11th (J1.40m).

Alissa DeShane placed fifth in the pole vault for clearing the 2.93m mark. DeShane was joined by her freshman teammate Tara Ryan, who tied for seventh at the 2.48m mark.

St. Ambrose freshman Annah Miller had a strong performance in the shot put, placing fifth with an 11.21m throw. Sarah Smith placed eighth (10.51m), Felica McCroy finished in 10th (9.57m) and Taylor Smith placed 12th (8.93m).

Miller continued her success in the weight throw, placing sixth with a throw of 12.96m. Anna Dunne placed ninth with an 11.21m throw. Sarah Smith placed 14th (10.07m) and McCroy finished in 16th place (8.64m).

Hana HartMickey Hayes and Brooke Hass competed for the Bees in the pentathlon. Hart finished in fourth (2543 pts), Hayes placed 10th (2176 pts) and Hass took 11th (1737 pts).

The St. Ambrose men's also had a great finish to their 2021 Indoor season, tying their best overall finish in the CCAC conference meet.

St. Ambrose standout Will Reemtsma finished his sophomore season with great success, winning the gold in the men's 400m dash in a photo finish (50.38). Reemstma beat out second-place by four-thousandths of a second. Reemstma found the podium again for his speedy performance in the 60m hurdles, taking silver with a time of 8.54. Reemstma also scored a point for his eighth-place finish in the 60m dash.

Also running with Reemtsma in the 400m dash was St. Ambrose freshman Ben Wilson, who finished 11th with a time of 54.28.

Samuel Rush represented the Bees in the 200m dash, finishing 17th with a time of 24.78.

St. Ambrose senior Kyle Sellers had a great performance in the 600m run, finishing in fourth-place (1:26.43). Jackson Stoos wasn't far behind in seventh-place (1:26.92), with less than a half-second separating the two.

Kale Cartee had some great performances in the mid-distance events, finishing in sixth-place the 800m run (2:04.23) and fifth-place in the 1000m run (2:31.72). In the 800m run, Cartee was joined by St. Ambrose's Elijah Boesch in 11th-place (2:10.37) and Tommy Ashby in 12th-place (2:12.47).

St. Ambrose freshman Lucas Creek was the lone runner for the Bees in the 1 mile run, placing fifth with a time of 4:31.41.

Matt Jung also had a great finish to his 2021 indoor season, capturing silver in the 5000m run (15:16.90) and a strong sixth-place finish in the 3000m run (9:10.26).

Jung was followed closely in the 3000m run by Creek, who finished in sixth-place (9:12.50). St. Ambrose senior Danny Parr placed 14th (10:03.50).

St. Ambrose won silver in the 4x400 relay, with Will Reemtsma, Cody Thole, Jackson Stoos and Kyle Sellers carrying the baton for the Bees (3:26.57).

The St. Ambrose throwing team had a fantastic performance at the CCAC Indoor Championships, with the Bees claiming two-thirds of the podium and two other Bees scoring points in the shot put. Mick Saloninas won gold with a meet-best throw of 16.28m. Jonah Wilson joined Saloninas on the podium, winning bronze with a throw of 15.05m. Alec Seifert placed fifth (14.04m) and Bryce Peacher took sixth (13.45m).

Saloninas' 16.28m mark is now a St. Ambrose school record, passing Chris Dubree's 16.07m record set in 2011. Saloninas' throw is the 11th best mark in the NAIA.

The weight throw was more of the same for St. Ambrose, with three Bees scoring points for their throws. St. Ambrose junior Geoff Murphy captured silver in the weight throw (14.71m). Jacob White placed fourth with a 14.37m throw. Payton Woods placed sixth (13.62m) and Hunter Kasap placed 10th (11.18m).

Keegan Norris and Quantrell Polk represented the Bees in the triple jump, with Norris jumping to a fifth-place finish (12.39m) and Polk jumping to a sixth-place finish (12.00m).

Polk also jumped for the Bees in the long jump, placing eighth with a 6.21m jump.

Justin Griser took fifth in the high jump for clearing the 1.78m mark. Griser placed fifth following a judge's decision. Isaac Mojica and Alec Seifert tied for sixth-place, both clearing the 1.73m mark in the same amount of attempts.

The pole vault was another great field event the Bees. St. Ambrose junior Samuel Rush won silver, clearing 4.40m. Jacob Rossmiller placed fourth (3.65m) and Mojica placed fifth (3.35m).

St. Ambrose freshman Cody Thole added one last medal for the Bees, winning gold in the men's heptathlon. Thole finished with a meet-best 4170 points. Also competing in the multi-event for the Bees were Norris and Mojica, who placed fifth (3327 pts) and sixth (2692 pts), respectively.

The NAIA Indoor Championships will begin on March 3, 2021, in Yankton, S.D. National qualifiers from St. Ambrose will be announced as soon as possible.
