Bees wrap up regular season at COVID Season Finale

The St. Ambrose track and field teams wrapped up their regular seasons this weekend when they hosted the COVID Season Finale in Davenport, Iowa. The Fighting Bees played host to teams from five other schools: Grand View, Mount Mercy, Calumet-St. Joseph, Waldorf and Viterbo. The women finished as the meet runner-up, scoring 129 points to Grand View's 139. The men took third, racking up 94 points in the one-day meet. The Grand View men took their meet as well, tallying 168 points throughout the meet.

St. Ambrose junior star Megan Jansett finished her 2021 regular season in strong fashion, taking the gold in back-to-back individual events. Jansett blitzed to a gold medal in both the 200m dash (27.02) and the 400m dash (1:00.51). Jansett's 400m dash time was her fastest on the year and is the 26th fastest time in the NAIA this season.

Jansett was followed in the 200m dash by her freshmen teammates Anna Possehl (30.67) in ninth place and Alexis Oliver (x32.36) in 10th place.

Jadie Knecht also found the podium in the 400m dash, taking silver with a time of 1:03.33 to go 1-2 with Jansett. Also running for the Bees were MacKenzie Clary (x1:13.50) in 10th place and Tara Ryan (x1:14.07) in 11th place.

Claire Duncan continues to shine in the 800m run, placing fourth with a time of 2:33.05 in a tight race for the podium. Duncan finished less than two seconds behind third place. Carrington Curphy took 11th place with a time of 2:51.32.

Jessica Mendenhall represented the Bees in the women's 1000m run, barely missing the podium in fourth place. Mendenhall finished with a time of 3:22.76 to score six points for her team.

The women's 3000m run was the highlight race for St. Ambrose, with three Bees sweeping the podium. Michaela Pieroni took the gold (10:32.69), Megan Grady took silver (10:52.51) and Emma Duncan took bronze (x11.02.74). Pieroni's time was her personal best on the year and is the 19th fastest time in the NAIA this season.

St. Ambrose junior Leah Rose bolted to another medal in the women's 60m hurdles, taking bronze with a quick time of 9.39. Rose missed silver by only two-hundredths of a second in a photo finish.

The Fighting Bees took third in the women's 4x400m relay, running Jadie KnechtLeah RoseClaire Duncan and Jessica Mendenhall.

St. Ambrose went 1-2 in the women's high jump, with Mickey Hayes winning the gold in the women's high jump as the lone competitor to clear the 1.51m mark. Hana Hart took second place for clearing the 1.46m mark. Hart took silver following a judge's decision. Also jumping for the Bees was Brooke Hass, who took fourth place clearing the 1.41m mark.

Alissa DeShane had another strong meet, taking silver in the women's pole vault for clearing 3.12m. Tara Ryan shared fourth place with Viterbo's Emily Howell for clearing the 2.52m mark to score four points for her team.

St. Ambrose took two-thirds of the podium in the women's long jump, with Abby Camp taking silver (5.38m) and Madalyn Oltman taking bronze (5.03m). Hass took 12th place with a 3.95m jump. Camp's jump was her best on the year and is the 29th best mark in the NAIA this season.

Sarah Smith took eight place in the women's shot put with a 11.09m throw. Annah Miller finished in 10th place in the with a 10.78m throw. Anna Dunne (x9.43m) and Felica McCroy (x9.01) took 14th and 16th place, respectively.

The same quartet threw in the weight throw for the Bees: Miller took 12th (11.20m), Dunne placed 14th (9.96m), McCroy finished 15th (x9.52m) and Smith place 17th (x8.21m).

The St. Ambrose men also finished their regular season out strong. Jackson Stoos had a great meet to cap off his regular season, racing to a silver medal in the 200m dash (23.81) and a bronze medal in the 400m dash (52.42).

Also running for the Bees in the 200m dash was Quantrell Polk, who finished in eighth place with a time of 25.67.

St. Ambrose freshman Cody Thole finished sixth in the 400m dash (53.35) to score four points for the Bees.

Senior runner Kyle Sellers took fourth place in the men's 800m run (2:03.02), followed by teammates Tommy Ashby in seventh (2:08.85) and Elijah Boesch in eighth (x2:11.24).

Cross country Bees Simon Hagen and Danny Parr represented St. Ambrose in the men's 1-mile run, with Hagen finishing sixth (4:59.94) and Parr finishing ninth (5:08.54).

Matt Jung finished his spectacular junior campaign with another gold medal, winning the men's 3000m run with a time of 8:51.27 in a tight race with his teammate Dan Froschle in second place (8:51.43). Lucas Creek finished fourth with a time of 9:11.09. Also running for the Bees were Elliott Klauer in ninth (x9:38.35) and Kale Cartee in 11th place (x9:40.55).

St. Ambrose took silver in the men's 4x400m relay. Cody Thole, Kyle Sellers, Elijah Boesch and Jackson Stoos carried the baton for the Bees.

The men's pole vault was the standout field event for St. Ambrose, with three Bees sweeping the podium. Samuel Rush took gold (4.36m), Isaac Mojica took silver (3.42m) and Jacob Mertes took bronze (x3.42) following a judge's decision. Rush's 4.36m vault was his best on the year and the 25th-highest mark in the NAIA this season.

Mojica continued his strong day at the high jump mat, placing fourth after clearing the 1.79m mark. Also clearing the 1.79m mark was Justin Griser, who placed fifth following the judge's decision. Also jumping for the Bees was Alec Seifert, placing eighth (x1.64m).

Quantrell Polk and Keegan Norris represented the Bees in the men's long jump. Polk placed seventh with a 5.96m jump, and Norris placed eighth with a 5.82m jump.

St. Ambrose had a strong day in the men's shot put. Mick Saloninas and Jonah Wilson both had their best throws on the season. Saloninas placed second out collegiate competition with a 15.33m throw, and Wilson placed third with a 15.24m throw. Seifert also had a strong day with the shot put, placing fourth (x14.62m). Saloninas and Wilson have the 18th and 20th best marks in the NAIA this season, respectively.

Also throwing for the Bees was Geoff Murphy in seventh place (x14.27m), Bryce Peacher in ninth place (x13.97m), Jacob White in 12th place (x12.59m), Payton Woods in 13th place (x11.88m) and Hunter Kasap in 15th place (x11.67m).

White had the best toss for the Bees in the men's weight throw, placing fourth with a 14.11m throw. Murphy placed sixth (13.57m), Woods placed eighth (x12.53m) and Peacher placed 10th (x11.46m).

The COVID Season Finale was the final regular-season meet for St. Ambrose. The Fighting Bees will host the CCAC Conference Championships this weekend at the St. Ambrose Wellness and Recreation Center in Davenport, Iowa. No spectators will be allowed.
