SAU remains perfect, wins both meets at Bumble Rumble

The Fighting Bees can't seem to slow down, with both the men's and women's teams taking down the Bumble Rumble this weekend to win their third consecutive meet to start the 2021 indoor season. St. Ambrose hosted teams from six other schools at the Bumble Rumble: Columbia (Mo.), Trinity Christian, Judson, Grand View, Missouri Baptist and Clarke. Both teams won their meets easily, with the women racking up 167 points and the men scoring an impressive 214 points over the two-day meet.

St. Ambrose freshman Anna Possehl kicked the scoring off for the Bees, securing three points for her sixth-place finish in the 60m dash (8.97).

Jadie Knecht took bronze in the 200m dash (28.27), followed closely by her teammate Leah Rose in fourth-place (28.66).

The women's 400m dash was a strong event for St. Ambrose, with three bees finishing in the top-four. Megan Jansett continued her strong junior campaign, winning the event (1:.02.03). Knecht added another medal on the day, taking silver with a time of 1:04.20. MacKenzie Clary took fourth (1:13.28), scoring an additional five points for her team.

St. Ambrose senior Carrington Curphy had an excellent weekend at the Bumble Rumble, finding the podium in two events. Curphy took silver in the 800m run (3:00.88) and bronze in the 1-mile (6:45.38).

Claire Duncan built on her success from the SAU opener, finding the podium with her performance in the 1000m run. Duncan took silver with an impressive time of 3:23.80.

St. Ambrose standout tandem of Michaela Pieroni and Megan Grady went 1-2 yet again, this time in the 5000m run. Pieroni finished first this time around (18:37.33), with Grady taking second-place (18:47.03). Pieroni and Grady were accompanied by their fellow cross-country teammate Jessica Mendenhall (20:30.27), who finished in fifth-place and scored four points for the Fighting Bees.

Leah Rose blitzed to a gold-medal finish in the 60m hurdles, with a quick time of 9.82.

The women's track team finished the meet strong, with Megan JansettJadie KnechtLeah Rose and Claire Duncan winning the 4x400m relay by 11 seconds.

The success continued for St. Ambrose in the field events. Mickey Hayes found the podium in the women's high jump once again, only this time winning the event. Hayes took gold for clearing the 1.50m mark.

St. Ambrose went 1-2 for a second time at the Bumble Rumble, with Alissa DeShane and Tara Ryan dominating the women's pole vault. DeShane, last week's CCAC women's field athlete of the week, took gold for clearing the 3.00m mark. Ryan placed second for clearing the 2.55m mark.

Leah Rose translated her success from the track to the long jump pit, finishing in fourth place and scoring five points for St. Ambrose with a jump of 4.62 meters. Hana Hart also scored for Bees, securing four points for her fifth-place finish (4.17m)

The women's shot put found two Fighting Bees on the podium. Annah Miller took silver with a throw of 10.86 meters, and Sarah Smith took bronze with a throw of 10.81 meters. Also throwing shot put for the Bees were Anna Dunne in sixth-place (9.83m) and Felica McCroy in ninth-place (8.77m).

Dunne continued her strong throwing day with a fifth-place finish in the weight throw (10.86m) and scoring four points for her team. McCroy tallied an additional two points for St. Ambrose, hitting a mark of 9.08 meters for seventh-place.

Hana Hart rounded out the scoring for St. Ambrose. Hart secured three points for her performance in the women's heptathlon, placing fifth in a field of ten. Also competing in the heptathlon for St. Ambrose were sophomores Liliana Olsen and Brooke Hass.

The St. Ambrose men's team got off to an extremely fast start, highlighted by a standout performance by sophomore Andrew Olenek. Olenek bolted to the top spot in the 60m dash preliminaries, only to turn around and repeat his top performance in the finals. Olenek's time of 7.20 easily took gold. Olenek was accompanied by his freshman Rily Rinaldi in the 60m dash finals, who placed fifth in a photo finish. Rinaldi secured the four points by eclipsing Colombia's (Mo.) Devin Kottwitz by four-thousandths of a second.

And he wasn't done winning yet. Olenek went on to win the men's 200m dash as well, edging out his St. Ambrose teammate Jackson Stoos by a half-second to take the gold (23.14). Stoos took silver with an impressive time of 23.88.

Jackson Stoos added another medal to his weekend, only this time it was gold. Stoos' took first place in the 400m dash with a time of 52.69, nearly four seconds ahead of second-place. Stoos shared the podium with his younger brother Maxwell Stoos, who took bronze in the event (56.59).

St. Ambrose senior Kyle Sellers found the podium for his performance in the 600m run. Sellers took silver with a time of 1:27.92.

Ben Wilson represented the Fighting Bees in the 800m run, finishing in sixth-place and scoring three points for his team (2:08.65).

The men's 1000m run was the strongest event for St. Ambrose, with four bees finishing in the top-five. Freshmen Kale Cartee and Lucas Creek took the top two places, with Cartee taking gold (2:41.13) and Creek taking silver (2:43.82). Fellow freshman Tommy Ashby finished fourth (2:55.49) and senior Danny Parr finished fifth (3:24.67).

Creek and Parr continued their success in the distance events, with Creek taking silver in the 1-mile run (4:37.23), followed by Parr in fifth-place (5:13.12).

St. Ambrose standout Matt Jung was the lone collegiate runner in the 5000m run, posting an impressive time of 15:23.55.

The Fighting Bees took silver in a very close 4x400m relay, with only two seconds separating the top three teams. Kyle Sellers, Maxwell Stoos, Kale Cartee and Tommy Ashby carried the baton for the Bees.

St. Ambrose had a great weekend in the field events, with multiple Bees taking gold across the events. Sophomore Alec Seifert cleared a 1.67m mark to win the men's high jump.

Sam Rush and Jacob Rossmiller tied for first in the men's pole vault after both Bees cleared the 3.75m mark. Also jumping for St. Ambrose were freshmen Jacob Mertes (3.30m) and Maxwell Stoos (2.85m) in fifth and seventh-place, respectively.

Quantrell Polk jumped for the Fighting Bees in the men's long jump, hitting a mark of 5.96m to take the silver medal.

The men's shot put was the highlight of the field events for the Bees, with St. Ambrose sweeping the podium. Jonah Wilson took gold (14.88m), Mick Saloninas took silver (14.05m) and Geoff Murphy took bronze (13.03m). Also throwing for St. Ambrose were Bryce Preacher (12.94m) in fourth-place, Payton Woods (12.30m) in seventh-place, Hunter Kasap (12.08m) in eighth-place, Seifert (11.76m) in 10th-place and Jacob White (11.51m) in 11th-place.

Murphy threw well in the weight throw, bringing home a silver medal with a throw of 14.29 meters. White also brought home some hardware, winning bronze with his 13.21-meter mark in the weight throw. Also throwing for the Bees were Woods (11.52m) in seventh-place, Kasap (11.22m) in eighth-place and Bryce Peacher (10.06m) in ninth-place.

Keegan Norris and Isaac Mojica finished up the scoring for the Fighting Bees. Norris finished in fifth-place overall for four points. Mojica took sixth-place overall for three points.

The St. Ambrose track & field teams will compete again this Saturday when they host the SAU Quad at the St. Ambrose Wellness and Recreation Center in Davenport, Iowa. No spectators will be allowed.
